Letters io the editor James refreshing and honest: writer To the Editor: Might I take issue with two columns in your paper. First, "Pressing Matters" by John James. He is not without his fans. His vitriolic humor is refreshing and honest. It is a pleasant change from political double-talk. His article is the first I look for every week. When the article is political/ cultural it gets sent to Toronto, Edmonton, Sydney and Erina (the last two places being in Australia). We all enjoy his cy- nacism and his ability "to call a spade a shovel." I will miss you, Mr. James. I hope your life comes together quickly so, for purely selfish reasons, I can once again flip the pages looking for you. Second, is the Baptist Church's pamphlet "The Facts of Life." When will they be put- ting out Volume Two? You know, the one with the explicit photos of "unwanted children." The photos of children with cig- arette burns on their arms, knife wounds on their backs and black eyes and broken nos- es should suffice. (It's accepted you cannot photograph the emotional scars.) In this way the public will be made fully aware of both sides of the issue. Allow them to make up their own minds. K.E. Lowden, R.R. #3, Port Perry Liberal Party hope of the future To the Editor: Inferences from the media (not your paper) [sic] have been that the Durham Riding Association represents "a pseudo-political party dedicated to a pseudo- political cause' - pro-life. I would ask that you allow me to explain how the pro-life philosophy affects one's political views. To be pro-life (including anti- abortion and anti-euthanasia)- is to assert the intrinsic value of every human being, from concep- tion to death, no matter what the circumstances of the conception and no matter whether the person is, in the eyes of the world, useful or productive to our society. This pro-life philosophy will of necessi- ty decide our political orientation. The Liberal Party of Canada has always asserted the value of the individual. It should be noted that when a motion affirming the sanctity of human life was presented in the House of Com- mons, over half the Liberal Members of Parliament voted in favor of the motion. This hardly puts the Durham Association out- of-step with the Liberal Party of Canada. Being pro-life does not mean that we are concerned with one issue only. Far from it. Of course a pro-life philosophy is fundamen- tal to our attitudes and actions,_ but we are concerned about many, many issues in Canada today. We are concerned about the uni- ty of this country. Quebec belongs to Canada, and we must convince the Quebecois that they are welcome, without giving so many concessions that we alienate other provinces. We must combat the effects of the GST and the reces- sion. We must deal with the im- migration situation in a compas- sionate, yet practical way. We a N Please recycle _ this newspaper must ensure our youth are educated sufficiently to compete in an increasingly high-tech world. We must change the pre- sent unfair taxation on families supporting the children who are the future of this country. We must encourage research and development in order to develop industries which can hold their own against ever-increasing com- petition in other parts of the world. We believe the Liberal Party of Canada is the hope of the future. We believe there are many pro- blems in this country which must be addressed. Because we are concerned about the preservation of life does not mean we are not concerned about the many other issues facing our country today. Quite frankly, we pro-lifers are fed up with being labelled "one- issue' persons, when there are so many things about which we are concerned. I understand that the first item of business for the Durham Liberal Association will be to open up the Association meetings to the membership. This was not done in the past. It is sincerely hoped that members of the Durham Liberals will attend the monthly meetings and express their views. One could only wish that we had the same opportunity in the Oshawa Riding.
