This was a home and home series. This also was Dany Lyons' first game as a Malmont player. As it turned out, Danny's hustle earned him a goal in his first game with the team. Both teams had many end to end rushes and tested the opposition's goal tender often. The Malmont boys matched Pickering stride for stride until the 5:02 mark when Pickering lit up the scoreboard on a goal mouth scramble. At 7:48, Pickering scored again on another goal mouth scramble and Port playing a man short. At the end of one period the score read Pickering 2, Port 0. Port Perry turned up the heat a bit in the second period, when Danny Lyons and Seth Gray had semi break-aways, only to be turned away empty handed by the big Pickering goalie. Shortly after that the Malmont goalie Corey Branton came up big on two break-aways of his own. The defensive pair of Justin Kowalczyk and Jeff Ashton kept the Pickering team at bay while protecting their goalie, Corey Branton time and time game. With 3:08 left in the second period, Pickering scored again under a sprawling Malmont goalie. At the end of two periods of play Picker- ing led 3-0. Port came out in the third period ready to play hockey, and play they did. With 3:15 gone in the third, Casey Van Schagen hit Seth Gray curising in over the Pickering blue line and See You Later Bye, Port's on the board. At 5:20 Pickering jammed one in one a scramble in front with Port playing short handed. Most of the play in the third period was going Port's way except for one thing. They couldn't jam it past that big Pickering goalie. At 11:03 Adam Jones side stepped a check, head manned the puck up to Danny Lyons breaking into the Pickering zone and beat the Pickering goalie cleanly to close the gap to 4-2, At the 13 minute mark of the third, Pickering scored on a deflection to make the score 5-2 for Pickering. Port had Pickering hammed in their own zone and us- ed the Pickering goalie for target practice with Casey launching three heavy shots at the goalie on- ly to come away empty handed. Port pulled their goalie for an ex- tra attacker and the Port team swarmed all around the Pickering net but the puck stayed out. Dillan Weber let loose a wicked wrist shot that just missed on the far side. Port did a good job killing penalties especially the bench minor coach Wilbur got for wishing someone a happy birth- day or something. The horn sounded and Picker- ing defeated Port by a score of 5-2 in the opening game. Both teams had 21 shots on net and despite the score, Port played a respectable game. Honorable mention for good hustle goes to Scott Jeffrey and honorable mention for good defen- sive effort goes to Justin Kowalczck. An honorable men- tion goes to Brad Johnson for his relentless fore-checking. Country Style Bantams win close 5-4 contest The Port Perry Country Style Bantam A's had a quiet week with only a single league game on tap. A second match, in Ajax, was cancelled at the last minute. That left Mon- day's home game with Ux- bridge the only game action of the week. : Monday night Country Style did not display quite the level of intensity that was demon- strated in the final of the Co- bourg tournament last week- end, but they did play reasonably. Uxbridge put up a creditable showing despite their poor record, and made Port work for the win. Goal- tending in particular was out- standing for the visitors, as Port could easily have had a wider margin in scoring. As in the game in Uxbridge, Aaron Morrison gave his team the early lead with a first peri- od goal. Jay Tredway got that back for Port, before the 'peri- od ended with a super unas- sisted effort. Chad Kearns put Port in front early in the second, in- tercepting a point shot and netting the breakaway with a nice deke. Morrison came right back with his second, - then Harris gave Uxbridge the lead 22 seconds later. Sean E)- lis tied the game again in the third, banging one in from in close on assists from Joe Broadworth and Scott Heas. man. Things looked bad when the visitors counted again with 5:52 to play, but 22 seconds was the magic number again. This time Dave Bourgeois blasted the goal at 5:30, assist- ed by Craig Laird and Jeremy Windows & Doors Vision Control Solariums & Sunrooms Retractable Fabric Awnings pr or ; a Po 5 Rs te Soa gd ie - Geer. 'I'hen, with 3:04 left, Matt Morris capped off a flur- ry of Port pressure with a nice wrist shot that threaded the needle from the point. Bour- geois drew the assist on the winning goal. James Paterson shut the door from then on to make the score stand at 5-4. Monday night, the Country Style Bantam A's will be host- ing Pickering at 7:30. Auctioneers win and lose on weekend The Auctioneer's earned a split on weekend games against Port Hope and Lind- say. On Friday night Jason Whitworth paced Port Perry with a hat trick, but his effort was not enough and Port Perry ended up on the short end of a 4-3 score. Assisting Jason were Braden Tarbotton, Scott Brownson and defence. man Mark Blakely and Grant Hooker. On Saturday afternoon in Lindsay our ys put in a much more determined effort, outlasting Lindsay 3-2. Chris. topher Skerrat finished off a superlative end to end rush by Sean Jeffrey when he put the puck over the shoulder of the Lindsay netminder. Rounding out the scoring was production line with goals from Tarbotton and Whit- worth. Earning assists were Scott Brownson and Billy Carr. Once again Port had soi- id netminding from the tan- dem of Chris Monsma and D'Arcy Stevens, Playing exceptionally well for Port Perry this weekend was Mike LeFort who has be- come Port Perry's face off spe- cialist. The Auctioneer's see action again Monday night in Port Perry. DID YOU KNOW?
