Peter Hvidsten Local high school students receive Heritage Award for Youth Achievement Students from Port Perry High School are among more than 300 young people across the province who were recognized for their contribution to preserving heritage through the Ontario Heritage Trust’s 2007 Young Heritage Leaders program. The award was presented on February 21 by The Honourable David C. Onley, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario at Queen’s Park in Toronto. The students were recognized for their efforts last year in help- ing preserve the memory of eight World War II veterans, who were former students of the school. After finding an old wooden plaque, the students under the guidance of history teacher Nancy Hamer Strahl, decided to or- der a new granite plaque and hold a rededication ceremony in connection with Remembrance Day. “This is so fantastic. I’m so thrilled for them,” Ms. Hamer Strahl said when contacted by Focus on Scugog, a day before the awards ceremony in Toronto. She explained that high school students from all walks of life took part in the moving ceremony in the school’s auditorium. A large group of students and teachers travelled to Queen’s Park for the awards presentation. “The time and energy given by these young people in preserv- ing Ontario’s heritage is truly remarkable,” said the Lieutenant Governor. “Their work will ensure that future generations will benefit from their efforts.” “With their interest in history and willingness to step into lead- ership, these youth are poised to become future heritage cham- pions,” said The Honourable Lincoln M. Alexander, Chairman of the Ontario Heritage Trust. “‘!'m delighted they are being recognized and encouraged by their schools and communities.” About 40 students, accompanied by teacher Nancy Hamer Strahl attended the impressive ceremony on the grand staircase. website: www.focusonscugog.com Focus publisher recipient of Lieutenant Governor’s Ontario Lifetime Achievement Award Alifetime connection with the Scugog community and the his- tory that helped shape it has garnered J.
