If you're anything like this writer, you probably didn’t know that effective last April 1 (no this is not an April Fool’s joke) another new ‘tax’ has been applied a new tax they are calling an Environ- mental Handling Fee (EHF). This new tax (fee) is being applied to the purchase of all electronic products. So when you purchase a new computer, be prepared to pay an additional $13.44 (EHF) on top of the PST and GST that is already being applied. Then, when it wears out and you take it to the local landfill, you'll pay again to get rid of it. Bad enough the harmonized tax will become a huge tax grab for the province, now they've fig- ured out how to get even more out of us. Will it ever stop? On the local arts scene, nice to hear that Adam Connolly has received a $5,000 grant for ‘Emerg- ing Visual Arts’ from the Ontario Arts Council. The grant will be used for the creation of an Eco-Sculpture Exhibit in 2010. The Second Life For Trees project and work is underway collecting the trees from the city of Toronto and looking for a large work shop. The show will provoke interaction with the eco- sculp- tures, finding carved secrets captured inside the hollow tree by opening a door or peering through a porthole. The eco-sculptures will encompass drums to beat and delicately carved wind charms. And speaking of the arts, The Scugog Council for the Arts has been notified it has received an Ontario Tril- will be used to hire a manager of op- erations. The SCA is in its fifth year, with 150 current members, and has made a significant contribu- tion to the vibrancy of the arts community through annual events such as Showcase of the Arts, The SCA Literary Con- test, the Community in the Arts Awards and juried exhibi- tions. The new manager of operations was introduced at the SCA’s annual general meeting on April 28. (unfortunately past the Focus deadline)
