On Sunday May 16 the “Kirkin o’ the Tartan” will be celebrated at the St. John Presbyterian Church. The ceremony dates its origins to the defeat of Bonnie Prince Charlie by the British in 1746. After his defeat the Act of Proscription attempted to wipe out Scottish traditions. It outlawed Scottish music, dancing and the playing of bagpipes. It banned the speaking of Gaelic, the traditional Scottish language. It also banned the wearing of kilts or any sign of the tartan. In secret defiance, the Scottish carried a piece of tartan with them hidden from view whenever they attended church. Sympathetic ministers would bless the tartan pieces. When the ‘Act’ was dally wepealleal almost aay years later, Scots service was begun to celebrate the event. is this special service, the tartans of various clans are blessed. Here in Port Perry, the officers and pipes of the 78th Fraser Highlanders will lead a short parade from the High School down Queen Street to St. John Presbyterian Church. In the church they will participate in the ceremo- ny which will begin at 10:00 a.m. All Scots, and all those who wish they were Scots, are invited to wear their tartans and be a part of the ceremony. summer€ sue aN Located in our KID’S KLUB HOUSE (completely separate from Day care) = sna vt 2) 005-985-8783 ” To learn more about us, please visit our website: The Borelians Community Theatre Present: www Mestval of Canadian, One © Act Pla Ing Arts Tonk mn Centre for the Perform MAY aS 5 nats ye Tow! ailable at tthe a ee and sy ‘ate 7410 Spl it’ Michael G Wilmot Directed by Michael Serres Dinner Theatre Pa Ha wn Hall Box Off -PortPety WwW tow! all Box Office for details 905.985.8181 Olives + The Front FOCUS - MAY 2010 37
