The “Dragon Flies” Dragon Boat Festival, held here in Port Perry, has become one of the premier events of the Ontario circuit and local organizers are hard at work making sure this year’s festival is the best yet. This sixth running of the Dragon Boat races comes on the heals of an amazing event last summer, at which more than $148,000 was raised. Once again organizers are excited to announce that more than 50 teams have registered for the races, which will take place this year on Saturday, June 19 at Palmer Park along Port Perry’s lakefront. The Port Perry Dragon Boat Festival has developed an enviable reputation for promoting awareness of breast cancer through the event, which last year resulted in more than $140,000 being raised for cancer research. Again this year team members will be asked to secure pledges for the festival, as well as taking part in the mandatory practices at Palmer Park during the two weeks prior to the big day. On-water practices generally take place weekday evenings, 7-10 days before the event. Safety and fun go hand-in-hand at this festival! Aside from the message the dragon boaters are pro- moting, the event provides a colourful, competitive and fun-filled day for both participants and spectators. For those unfamiliar with Dragon Boat Racing, each race covers a 500 metre course with three boats in each heat. The Port Perry course will span Lake Scugog from the west side of Scugog Island near the causeway to an area in front of Palmer Park. The “Dragon Flies Breast Cancer Survivor Group”, better known as The Dragon Flies, was formed in the fall of 2002. Members come from all walks of life to enjoy social and emotional benefits as well as a physical sense of well-being in a team atmosphere. The group uses the sport of dragon boating as one of their major activities to encourage and maintain a healthy lifestyle during and following the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. Proceeds from the festival will be donated to four area hospitals: Community Memorial Hospital, Port Perry, Uxbridge Cottage Hospital, Ross Memorial Hospital in Lindsay and the Durham Regional Cancer Centre in Oshawa. Whether you're a spectator, volunteer or participant, the Port Perry Dragon Flies Dragon Boat Festival is not to be missed.
