returns to Mark June 25 on your calendar for a ‘life-changing event’and plan to attend the North Durham “Relay For Life” in Sunderland. Relay for Life is the annual Ca- nadian Cancer Society event which is the largest, most successful and exhilarating fundraising event the area has ever seen! Join hundreds as they take to the track for a 12-hour non-competi- tive relay, filled with fun, music and memories to last a lifetim: Starting at 7 p.m., participants are welcomed by young and old alike. Local survivors celebrate by walking the ‘Survivor's Victory Lap’ where they are supported, encouraged and applauded in their personal victory over cancer. You will recognize survivors by their bright yellow t-shirts. They are beacons of hope to all in the fight against this ruthless disease. Teams of 10 or more join to create a ‘tent city’, filled with team campsites. Live music and activities are planned for every hour; from crafts for the kids, Zumba dance classes and bingo. Head shaves and the ever-popular “Ms. Relay” compe- tition, where men are invited to don a wig, dress, lipstick and heels to participate in a ‘drag race’ - because we all know cancer is a drag! The most emotional moment of the night, the luminary ceremony, takes place at 10 p.m. Luminaries are inscribed in honour of a survivor or in memory of a loved one lost. NORTH DURHAM The luminaries are lit as a lone piper plays, while photos flash on the big screen of our cancer- fighting heroes. The following morning at 5 a.m., everyone comes together again in a lively and empowering ‘fight back’ ceremony. Sadly, virtually no one is unaffected by cancer. Almost everyone has a story to tell, and ‘Relay’ is the place to tell it. Why Relay? Because you can...if not you, then who? If not now, then when? Two out of five Canadi- ans will hear ‘you have cancer’ in their lifetime; if this disease hasn’t darkened your door yet, chances are it eventually will. ‘Relay For Life’ is an event not to be missed. Join us for the inspiring opening ceremonies, have dinner and support your community. Doing so, you'll be supporting a great cause. Last year, the ‘North Durham Relay for Life’ raised close to $180,000 that will enable the Canadian Cancer Society to continue to fund valuable, life-sav- ing research and provide services to those currently living with cancer. Every three minutes, another Canadian is told they have cancer. Despite this, people are living lon- ger, living better and living beyond this disease. more information, contact event co-chair Tammy Horvath 905-985-9747.
