Soap Carvings and watercolours Local artists, Pamela Meacher and Dennis Bayley exhibit their work at the Scugog Arts Resource Centre Pamela is well-known for her botani- cally styled native flora works on 100 percent rag paper and there are times. the faeries mischievously pop them- selves in one of her paintings. These paintings contain the mystery of an almost unseen world. Dennis works in a variety of soap- stones and draws on nature for his inspiration. In addition to his work as a soapstone carver, Dennis also teaches. introductory stone carving. Pamela and Dennis’ work is on display at the SARC Gallery starting November 6 at 181 Perry St. and is ‘open Monday to Friday 9:30 a.m.to 4 p.m. and Saturday’s from noon to 4 p.m. Silent Auction Port Perry United Church is holding. its silent auction again this year and one of the feature items is “Ted’s Shed”. This. shed, donated and built by Ted Griffen, has been a major fundraiser for the church and for almost 20 years. It is on. display outside the church now. Dana’s Diamonds Dana Smith travels to the Northwest Territories to visit Canada’s largest and most successful diamond mine Local business owner Dana Smith, of Dana’s Goldsmithing in Port Perry, has just returned from the trip of a lifetime —a visit to the Diavik Mine, Canada’s largest and most successful diamond mine located only 200 kilometres south of the Arctic Circle. result of her success in the retail diamond trade, she was selected to join 24 dealers across Canada invited to take part in this unique journey. They were accompanied by Northwest Territories minister for industry, Bob McLeod. iavik Mine is owned by Rio Tinto, one of the world’s leading mining companies. This is the first time that the mine has been opened to dealers or any member of the public. Because of safety issues it may be the only time that it will be open. The party flew to Yellowknife and then a one hour flight north of Yel- lowknife to the Diavik Mine on a small island in Lac de Gras. The mine is pres- ently an open pit facility although plans are already underway to proceed with underground extension later this year. “My visit to the mine was quite surreal,” she said. “The sheer size of the open pit is staggering.
