Fundraising gets started with “Gimme Shelter” dinner for new Uxbridge/ Scugog animal shelter Time is running out for anyone wishing to attend the first annual “Gimme Shelter” fundraising dinner, organized to support efforts to build a new animal shelter for Scugog and Uxbridge. Tickets are reported to be selling quickly for the dinner, being held at Skyloft Ski Resort on May 5. The event will be hosted by popular actor/ writer Neil Crone and feature entertainment by Kathy Norman- deau, Thomas Baker and singer-songwriter Wendell Ferguson. The existing animal shelter, located on Reach Street just west of Port Perry, has served both communities for the past 20 years, but the building is deteriorating and has outgrown its ability to keep up with demands for the present and future. Art Mathews, president of the board of directors of the “New Animal Shelter” committee said, “This fundraiser kicks off our capital campaign and will raise enough money for us to begin the design phase of our project.” In March, Uxbridge Township committed $5,000 to cover a portion of the estimated $8,500 for initial draw- ings and plans for the proposed new animal shelter and in April, Scugog Township council agreed to match the $5,000 of funding committed by Uxbridge. Just where the $5,000 will come from, since nothing had been set aside for this expense in the 2012 budget, 416 FOCUS - MAY 2012 5. MAY 64 FINAL FINAL.indd 16 is a bit of a mystery but Mayor Mercier was confident they could find funds by year’s end. Just where the new Uxbridge-Scugog Shelter will be built has been kept under wraps, but Mayor Gerri Lynn O'Connor of Uxbridge may have dropped a hint following a meeting last month. An article published in the Port Perry Star on April 16 hinted the new shelter could be built on munici- pal land at 5500 Lakeridge Rd. The identified site sits between Scugog Line 8 and Medd Road on Lakeridge Road in Uxbridge Township. The article quoted the mayor as saying, “We haven't decided on the amount of land yet, but the appropriate acreage will be given.” She also noted that ww Sunday, May 13th Remember your mom on thers Day with a gift fr The Wee Tartan Shop Keith Jack Jewellery Choose from clothing, crystal, or put together a basket of British Food items. the wee TARTAN shop When only the best of the British Isles will dot 177 Queen Street, Port Perr 905-985-6573 » www.theweetartan 12-04-23 9:59AM MONPL LOLS
