For about 10 years prior to the Latcham Centre (right) becoming headquarters for the local senior citizens group, the former Royal Ca- nadian Legion Hall (left), which was located at the rear of the Port Perry Post Office, was home to this group of energetic seniors. Continued from page 33 one or two performances, so we branched out to nurs- ing homes and other centres. “Some real talents emerged: not long ago, Lynn Doucette took second place for her singing in an area competition, and our carvers and pickleballers have also won awards. “Eventually, those shows became more and more complex. Just like the club as a whole, they evolved over time.” A new initiative, Enci reports, will expand the club’s proud tradition of community involvement. Ultimately, that unity will allow us to speak with one voice to the mayor, council, and township staff on issues like recreation, housing, and transportation.” With such a long list of activities, inside as well as beyond the Latcham Centre, both Enci and Gord credit their busy schedules with some measure of their con- tinued good health. Enci makes an interesting and insightful observation about life as a modern senior. “We're healthier now than, say, when my mother reached this age. I celebrated my 80th last month by playing a game of pickleball! That kind of thing keeps you young.” Age, many people will tell you, depends largely on your state of mind. “You're as young as you feel,” the saying reminds. The calendar is merely a convenience —a tool — for measuring time. A stimulating blend of mental and physical activity, with a dash of community involvement for good measure, shows those conclu- sions aren’t just empty words among the members of a club which has lived by that credo now for 50 years. Small wonder, then, that you hear them called your “golden years.” By Scott Mercer Focus on Scugog [Reache =| | 181 Perry Street, Port Perry * 905-985-4971 or visit www. scugogchambert ca 34 FOCUS - NOVEMBER 2012 ‘11.NOVEMBER.56 final indd 34 12-10-22 8:45AM
