Maillo Dear Focus... Never too old for a makeover! Dear Editor You may have noticed that the Port Perry Com- munity Curling Club at Bay Street and Old Simcoe has greatly improved its appearance recently. Anew steel skin and a large club crest on the outside of the building are only part of the story. Behind the clean exterior look, new insulation has been added to improve the energy efficiency of the place. Inside there are many improvements including new carpeting and a much improved men’s locker room. Perhaps the bright new appearance warrants men- tion in your Changing Faces feature. While the club isn’t going anywhere it has certainly changed its face. All the leagues are up and running now and we ex- pect to continue to bring along lots of “Little Rock” and “Bantam” curlers again this season, which by the way is the club’s 55th year in operation. Bruce Rogers, President, Port Perry Community Curling Club EDITORS NOTE: Anyone driving by the curling club could not help but notice the new, modern look for this 55 year old building. A Changing Face for sure. MORE LETTERS ON PAGE 4 & 12 our cover Not much needs to be said about this month’s dramatic cover, other than it is a timely reminder of Remembrance Day. Dear Editor, Focus readers will no doubt have read about the Scugog Lake Stewards and our work to improve the health of Lake Scugog. You may have read as well about the new and much more aggressive hybrid of Eurasian watermilfoil that is threatening our lake and making our shorelines both unattractive and biologi- cally unhealthy. At the moment, everything to tackle that prob- lem must be permitted by the Trent-Severn Waterway under strict guidelines, We have no jurisdiction over the lake whatsoever. Therefore, we are a community with a big problem but left with no authority or tools to fix it. The Lake Stewards are dedicated to try to change that and get some action through a large number of short and long term options over and above what is already being done to reduce nutrient runoff from land that helps fuel that growth. In order to make our case to the Trent-Severn and beyond, we need your help. We need to show we have a big membership base to demonstrate that we repre- sent the citizens of our community, our businesses and organizations. Therefore, we are asking you to download our membership form on the front page of our website, http://www.scugoglakestewards.com/ and send that and your membership fee to the address listed on the form. These forms are also available in hard copy for pickup at the Chamber of Commerce office at Unit G3 of 181 Perry Street, or at P’lovers on Queen Street. Donations or memberships over twenty dollars are eligible for tax refunds as we are an incorporated all-volunteer organi- zation. This is not a small project. It will take many mem- bers, volunteers to help us in our work, funds and much funding later on to to pay for whatever option proves to be the best to combat our problems. Join us and we will keep you well informed about our work. Barbara Karthein President, Scugog Lake Stewards bkarthein@yahoo.ca Appreciated article on bread making Dear Editor Many thanks for the wonderful and detailed article on my bread and pizza operation in Prince Albert by Jon van Bilsen. The cover shot was particularly striking and has elicited many very positive comments. The entire thing has spiked quite a bit of interest from local residents, but, in hindsight, I should have stressed that I went out of the retail business some years Kudos to Jon for a solid piece of work.
