Winter Snowshoe Adventure Family Day at Nonquon Environmental Centre The Friends of the Nonquon are inviting Scugog residents to come out on Family Day, Monday, February 18th, to experience the won- ders of the winter wetland at the Nonquon Environmental Education Centre. The Nonquon E.E.C. is situated near the corner of Old Simcoe Street and Scugog Line 10, in the heart of the Nonquon Provincial Wildlife Reserve, a provincially owned and protected tract of wetland and woodland that straddles the river of the same name. The newly formed Friends of the Nonquon is a group of volunteers ose mission is to promote appreciation, conservation, education and understanding of the ecological significance of the Nonquon wetland and its watershed. The upcoming Nonquon Winter Wetland Snowshoe Adventure is a great opportunity to come out with the family to experience this natu- ral area at Port Perry's doorstep. The wetland may appear rather lifeless under ice and snow and with the trees bare of leaves. However, the water continues to gurgle as it flows beneath the ice, and the annual cycle of life continues. Some animals lie dormant and snug in their winter chambers and they will not be found while others continue to be active. Deer band together in the cedar groves where there is less snow and coyotes roam widely in their search for prey. River Otters slide along the frozen river while Two school students visiting Nonquon Environ- voles create tunnel runways under the snow.
