Stealing money from a community charity is despicable and deserves a Big McThumbs Down. THUMBS DOWN - It’s always been felt that the Christ- mas season brings out the best in people - but not so in the case of one vandal who toppled six gravestones in Pine Grove Cemetery last month. A thumbs down seems inadequate punishment for the insensitive thug who not only destroyed sacred property but caused pain for the families whose loved ones’ resting place was desecrated. A huge thumbs down to the mindless individual who we can only hope is caught. THUMBS UP - to the Baagwating Community As- sociation for their continued generosity to groups and institutions throughout Scugog and Durham Region. The charitable arm of the Mississaugas of Scugog Is- land dispersed close to a half million dollars last month at its annual Christmas reception. Among the worthy recipients was the Port Perry Hospital Foundation which received $100,000. Thank you seems hardly adequate for the Baagwating’s generosity. But thank you anyway, and a big thumbs up! THUMBS DOWN - Charging anyone in need of 911 emergency service is a mistake, and council is wrong for insisting an ice fisherman pay $5,400 to be res- cued from the lake last winter. He may have used poor judgement, but 911 was designed for emergencies like this and authorities should not selectively charge some, and not others, who find themselves in perilous situations. Thumbs down if this is the new trend. THUMBS DOWN -A thumbs down is also in order for a decision by council to put the former War Memorial Library up for sale. The library was thoughtfully built as a monument to 47 young men who gave their lives in World War | to defend us. Selling a piece of the town’s heritage, which is also a memorial to these brave sol- diers, is beyond belief and disappointing. It appears as if Scugog is more concerned with dollars than duty. THUMBS UP - to the new owners of the former LCBO building on Perry St. for breathing new life into this historic building. The transformation from a stucco clad box is truly remarkable, and a credit to the vision of it's owners. When completed, the renovated building will become The Old Flame Brewery, which will be a welcome addition to the downtown.
