It was such a great night. And of course we couldn’t have done it without the 23 teams, 122 walkers 473 donors and 35 volunteers who put so much time and effort that contributed to the success of this event. Hope to see you Saturday February 20th 2016, in Uxbridge! 24 FOCUS - APRIL 2015 THUMBS UP - Following one of the coldest winters in the past few years, especially through February, we've been asked to give a ‘thumbs up’ to the town- ship crews for keeping our roads clear. In addition we should also be thankful to the independent snow re- moval operators who kept parking lots and driveways cleared, crossing guards, mail delivery personnel, water works employees and anyone else who had to work outside in sub-zero weather throughout the cold- est month in history. A tip of the hat to you all! THUMBS DOWN - Another reader gives a ‘thumbs down’ to people who insist on going through drive-thru takouts even during life- threatening cold weather. He feels unless you have small kids in car seats, or are a senior or handicapped, you should be getting out of your vehicle instead of forcing some minimum wage earner to get your coffee or burger. “Don’t forget you are only spending a couple of minutes with your win- dow open while these employees may be doing that for hours,” he writes. Something to think about! THUMBS DOWN - Finding parking places around Port Perry can be probelmatic at times, but at least one store owner near the corner of Water and 7A is completely frustrated. They suggest giving a ‘thumbs. down’ to Scugog Township for allowing a business to expand when they don’t have enough parking space for their customers — forcing them to find valuable spots in front of other business establishments. THUMBS UP - to one of Scugog’s most energetic and passionate evironmentalists, Barb Karthein, who was recently presented the “Conservationist Award” from Kawartha Conservation, in recognition of her committ- ment. Barb has dedicated more than 16 years to help protect and enhance the health of Lake Scugog, both independently and in her capacity as a director and president of the Scugog Lake Stewards. THUMBS DOWN - to the “gas gods” who sit in their ivory towers blindly deciding what the working stiff is going to pay for petro at the pumps. When oil dropped to less than $50 a barrel earlier this year, the price at the pumps also fell to the 80¢ litre range. But then prices at the pump edged up to more than $1.10 litre, while the price of oil remained stalled around $50 a barrel. No wonder the consumer gets frustrated! THUMBS DOWN - to uncaring pet owners who never pay attention to their dogs, leaving them in the yard barking for hours throughout the day and until late at night. Have some respect for your neighbours who enjoy their quiet time, whether day or night.
