Backyard rink, built secretly for local man fighting cancer, has provided hours of fun and memories for the Grills family Only Miranda Grills was in on the secret... It was a big surprise when her family came home to find their backyard transformed into a skating rink last December. TV Sports Director Lance Brown chose this Blackstock family to be the annual recipient of the gift of an outdoor rink for winter recreation. Miranda learned about this unique opportunity when Lance mentioned it on the newscast. She decided to apply by email. *” MOMENT The day that the team came to build the ice rink, Miranda and her oldest daughter Taylor, 15, were home sick, so Miranda put blankets up on the windows to the backyard to try to hide the fact that construction was going on. She ended up having to tell Taylor what was happening, since the noise gave it away. When her husband Matt, 10-year-old Brooklin and six- year-old Deegan came home, Miranda led them to the back- yard, and it was a WOW! moment. There was their very own hockey rink, designed with NHL Toronto Maple Leaf logos. “1 did it for Matt,” Miranda commented. The Grills family has had a rough go of it the past three years, since Matt was diagnosed with brain cancer. He has endured two operations and radiation treatments. Having the ice rink has been “great,” says Matt, who stopped skating long enough to chat. “We have always been an active family.” Every Saturday, it’s an impromptu party at the Grills.
