Heritage Scugog unveils local history Area residents can get to know their history a little easier while strolling Queen St., following the installation of two new heritage information plaques in the downtown. Spearheaded by the Heritage & Museum Advisory Committee, the heritage plaques were unveiled September 13, as part of a program to highlight sig- nificant historical information in the community. The Elias Williams Family plaque, recognizes Elias Wil- liams as the first white man to settle in Scugog Village (now Port Perry). Elias purchased 400 acres in April 1831 and much of this land is now the downtown business section of the town. A number of defendants of Elias Williams, were on hand for the commemoration, as the plaque was unveiled beside Williams Creek, in front of Reflection Park, the former lawn bowling green. In the past five years, the township with the help of the Heritage Committee have erected seven large plaques depicting historic events and buildings in Palmer Park and along Queen St. and ten smaller plaques on heritage buildings.
