ALONG THE WATERFRONT Above - Crowds gather on the dock at the Port Perry lakefront during the summer of 1953 to view speedboats and watch ‘speed trials’ on Lake Scugog. This was the first and only time Canadian speed trials took place on Lake Scugog, and 16-year old Ron Biggs of Ottawa set a new world record for hydroplanes. Top right - An elevated view of the wharf at the lakefront Port Perry in 1940. The building seen at the end of the pier was known as “the dockhouse’, and was used as change rooms for many years. It was removed during the spring of 1958 after being dam- aged by winter ice. Note there was a handrail along the north side, and a diving board near the end of the pier with two areas for swimmers to exit along side the dock. Right - Port Perry’s lakefront in 1965, with a boat heading out onto the lake. Boats in the distance are parked at the Port Perry Yacht Club, which was located just south of Palmer Park where the children’s playground is today. Below: It was almost 50 years ago that these two pictures were taken as boats were being launched near the lakefront dock, at the east end of Queen St., Port Perry. The boat launch was a busy Place every summer and attracted lots of interest as can be seen in this summer of 1965 picture. FOCUS - OCTOBER 2014 51
