Continued from page 13 Prior to his formal art training, Arnold displayed natural talent, as evidenced by the amazing pieces he created during his five years in the medical corps. It was in 1945, after returning from WWII with a limp, that Arnold enrolled at the Ontario College of Art (OAC) in Toronto. He completed the four year course in three years, graduating with the prestigious OCA Medal for Proficiency in Drawing and Painting. Now Arnold was ready to embark seriously on his chosen career as an artist, while si- multaneously indulging his passions for writing and playing the piano. ‘Red Leaves,’ the full-length nov- el, which Arnold struggled to write in his last days, was never published, Carol Smith is is seen here in her home with some of the pictures her father painted when Carol says, with sadness. she was a young girl, using her as a model. Peter Hvidsten As alittle girl, Carol commented that Arnold was “just her dad.” It wasn’t until she was older that she realized that her father was such a renowned and respected contributor to the contemporary world of fine art. Arnold had an inner drive to create and succeed, despite his humble roots. Born in Silverdale into a farming family in 1911, Arnold’s pre-war jobs included painting signs, driving trucks and working as an undertaker. After studying at OAC, Arnold’s illustrious career began. Here are a few of the highlights: *1952 - The Welsh Regiment purchased one of Arnold’s war paintings. *1955 - Arnold was commissioned to paint Lady Eaton. *1966 - He received an Honourable Mention for his ‘Big Bear Rock’ at Paris Salon, Grand Palace des Champs Elysses, Paris, France. *1971 - Arnold painted the controversial piece entitled ‘Falkowski, A Portrait of Poland,’ which was a frontpiece in Falkowski’s book ‘With the Wind in My Face.’ *1974 - He was commissioned to paint a portrait of Lucy Maude Mont- gomery, author of Anne of Green Gables. Successful one and two man shows were staged at many notable galler- ies, including Laing Galleries, Roberts Gallery, Casa Loma, Eatons College Street and McLaughlin Gallery.
