Sierra-Skye Ashkewe is more than just another pretty girl — she is beautiful, both inside and out. Crowned Miss Toronto Petite 2014 in the Miss Canada Pageant in August, the shy but well-spoken, 20-year-old young lady points out that the pageant is about more than just appear- ance, although part of the competition does include modelling bathing suits and gowns. She also had to write an essay, submit a biography, and complete interviews to show her intelligence and substance. Sierra-Skye is the daughter of Harold Ashkewe of the Missis- sauga’s on Scugog Island First Nation, and Elizabeth Rotenberg of Toronto. “Both of my parents are 100 percent native,” Sierra-Skye says with pride. Her diversified upbringing included, visiting her father for First Nations Christmas parties and powwows, and attending a Jewish school in Toronto. (Elizabeth was adopted into a Jewish family). For Sierra-Skye, it’s been the best of both id worlds. While Toronto offers educational and ca- reer opportunities, Sierra-Skye’s local band roots run deep. “1 like visiting Scugog because it is so different from the city,” she commented. “It's peaceful being out in nature. It makes me feel better. The air is cleaner and I can visit my dad, and family and friends, and forget my worries.” Please turn to page 5 Sierra-Skye with her good friend Koko, a rescue dog which has since found a forever home.
