Rudy, a squirrel monkey. than simply an animal lover. “I worked overseas with chimpanzees, as well as at the Fauna Sanctuary near Montreal. Some other volunteers have similar backgrounds.” Moving to a facility which served many varieties of primates, she was “shocked” by what she learned. “| thought I was well educated about primates and aware of their situation. But it was shocking to me to find out how many monkeys were in private homes, right ‘in our backyard.” Story Book’s potential move into Port Perry’s “back- yard” would represent a giant leap forward in many re- spects. Its resident population would nearly double with the addition of Northwood’s monkeys. There would be substantial benefits for the community as well, a prospect which excites Rachelle. “We could expand our outreach program to include onsite presentations,” she says, “And we could offer academic internships — at the moment, there’s no place in Canada for students to gain primate experience, other than research facilities. Ours could become a national model.” Story Book Primate Sanctuary operates without gov- ernment fundi: “Private donations are our main financial resource,” she says. “We do receive two small grants, but for the most part, we rely on public funding. “I’m happy to say we're currently receiving generous donations through our website, www.storybookmonkeys. org. But we still have a way to go before we achieve our goal: we see what Story Book could potentially become, and this move is a big dream for us.” But Story Book Primate Sanctuary began on the strength of dreams. With its bold vision and generous public support, the facility will successfully achieve those goals, and continue to provide professional care and personal love for monkeys who otherwise would have no one. That’s the dream of everyone at Story Book Farms — and as their website is proud to tell, it’s Darwin's dream, too.
