*SEPTEMBER.FOCUS.40pgs.indd 29 @ Port Perry High School marks 140 years of continuous education A number of groups and institutions, including Port Perry High School, are cel- ebrating landmark anniversaries throughout this year. Port Perry High School, which opened its doors as Port Perry Grammar School in September 1868, is marking its 140th year as an institution this year. Its first teacher and principal was James Youmans who taught all subjects and grades to 33 students. Youmans held his first school in the upstairs of a log cabin located ap- proximately where the greenhouse of today’s Port Perry High School now stands. The ground floor was occupied by an elementary school. In 1871 an act of the legislature changed the name of all Ontari schools to High Schools and at Christmas that year James Youmans bade farewell to the school that he had founded. He was replaced by the legendary Dougald McBride. A brand new elegant school building was opened in 1873 and Mc- Bride was joined by another teacher, Duncan Crawford who taught math and science. McBride became a legend through his teaching of Latin, and F through this subject produced more students for the medical \. schools at Toronto and Cobourg than any other school of its size in Ontario between the years 1880 and his retirement in 1910. Among those doctors was Dr. H. A. Bruce who graduated from PPHS in 1885 and later founded Wellesley Hospital in Toronto. He became the Lieut. Gov. of Ontario in 1932. He was joined as an army surgeon by Dr. James Moore who graduated from PPHS in 1888. Moore developed many new military surgical procedures. Another contemporary was Dr. Edwin Campbell who moved to Michigan and eventually left medicine to become a partner in the founding of General Motors and the Chevrolet Motor Company.
