CAMPBELLFORD MAN GETS ONE YEAR SENTENCE Cobourg, Dec. 8.--Gilbert Gibbs, Campbellford, a man with a long record said to have contemplated holding up a Port Hope railway station, was sentenced to one year in Guelph prison yesterday by Magistrate Floyd, of Cobourg, when he appeared on a charge of theft of a car from Colborne. In Camp- bellford, he is said to have sug- gested to a younger man in that town, the holding up of a railway station at Port Hope. TYENDINAGA SEEKS RURAL HYDRO LINES Belleville, Dec. 8.--Rural Tyend- inaga/is likely to have a large num- ber of users of rural hydro ex- tension lines shortly. Thursday night at the village of Shannon- ville, there was a large number of householders and others present at a meeting at which the question of serving th district with electric energy on the farms was dealt with. As far back as the sixth con- cession there are prospective us- ers of hydro energy. The meeting was a success in every way. Rose, Newcastle; PETERBORO MAYORS > FETES COUNCIL Peterboro, Dec, 8--His Worship Mayor Denne entertained the mem- bers of the City Council, the Utilities Commission and other city officials, haeds of departments and their wives at a banquet held in the Empress hotel Thurslay night. It was also made the occasion of honoring City Clerk S. R. Armstrong for the splen- did service which he had rendered the city of Peterboro during the last thirty-five years. As a slight token ofthe esteem in which Mr. Armstrong is held by the city council and heads of the departments a beautiful silver tray and tea set was presented to him. PEA VINERS WILL BE ? PUT IN FOR GROWERS Belleville, Dec. 8.--A meeting, the outcome of which may mean a great deal to the farmers in the district, was held in the school house at Union Vale. The Belle- ville canning factory is desirous of erecting two pea viners in this dis- trict and the meeting was for the purpose of ascertaining whether enough growers could be secured. Two hundred acres are asked for and at the meeting 150 acres were secured. There are still a number of farmers to hear from and it is altogether probable that viners will be located here. The possible locations is given as the William Cross property, it being the most central place in the dis- trict. ORATORICAL CONTEST HELD IN BELLEVILLE Belleville, Dec. 8--Owing to the fact that the County Council Rooms would not hold the crowd desiring to hear the Annual Oratorical Con- test for the Warden's Medals, the scene was shifted to the new Audi- torium of the Belleville Collegiate and Vocational School. Mr. Arthur L. Burke, Reeve of Sidney, acted as Chairman, while the Rev. Dr. F. E. Malott, Rev. L. M. Sharpe, and W, H. Nugent, County Clerk, acted as judges. - Thirteen boys and girls from the various school sections of the County of Hastings were present to' deliver their addresses and all showed a great deal of preparation had been made by their teachers and by the pupils themsclves. Each year the class of speakers improves, and this year was no exception. After 'weighing all the points to- gether, the judges finally decided that Miss Margaret O'Connor, of Marmora, and Lake who had chosen as her subject "The Necessity for Conserving Old Timber Resources and Re-forestation" had delivered the best address of the girls, and was accordingly awarded the Warden's Medal for girls. Miss Muriel Ver- milyea, of S. S. No. 5, Sidney, won the second prize for girls, her sub- ject being "The Contribution of Pub- lic School Pupils to Citizenship."
