He was enrolled yesterday afternoon, arriving on the noon train over the C.N.R., The pri- soner was handcuffed to one of his guards, Boven talked little and ap- peared rather sullen, although he had no complaints to offer. E., H. D. HALL OF PETERBORO HONORED BY MASONIC ORDER Peterboro, Dec. 29--The celebra- tion of St, John's night here was featured by a presentation to E. H. Ww D, Hall, former city solicitor, by the members of the three = Peterboro Masonic lodges in commemoration of the fiftieth anniversary of his be- ing exalted to the office of Worship- ful Master of Corinthian Lodge, the only other Ontario Mason known, to have achieved a similar distinction being also a Peterboro man, the late Henry Rush. GARDEN HILL BOY HAS NARROW ESCAPE Port Hope, Dec. 29.--Three year old Samuel Wilson, of Garden Hill, had a narrow escape from death Thursday afternoon when he swal- lowed half of the contents of a box of medicated ointment, which he found in the family home. Fortunately his condition was no- ticed in time and medical aid was summoned. After a difficult battle medical treatment won the victory and he soon rallied. This morning he was reported to be doing fairly well. RAILWAY EMPLOYE ARREST- ED ON FUR THEFT CHARGE Belleville, Ont, Dec. 29--Murray Woodcock, railway employe, was ar- rested yesterday, and charged before Magistrate Mikel with the theft of furs. A Belleville merchant purchas- ed a quantity of furs in the North Country some time ago and ordered them shipped by mail. Thursday the accused man walked into the pur- chaser's store and attempted to dis- pose of certain furs, A search of his home revealed that he had other furs in his possession. ARRESTED IN BELLEVILLE OVERSTAYED LEAVE Belleville, Dec, 29.--John Lavin and . Maguire, two members of the R.CH.A. at Kingston were arrested yesterday morning by Sergeants Harman and Truaisch, of the City Police, acting on instructions from the Battery lead at Kingston. Both men, who were on leave for the Christmas holidays, were due to re- port back Thursday at noon, but had over stayed theilr leave, with the re- sult that they were arrested. An es- cort arrived from Kingston yester- day at noon to take them back to the Limestone City. Mr, Leavens suffered three broken ribs as well as inter- nal injuries, BODIES ALL RECOVERED AFTER TRIPLE DROWNING Gananoque, Ont, Dec. 29--The bodies of Alden Pettit and Lawrence Ingersor, two of the three young men from Clayton, N.Y. who were drow- ned Monday about three miles east of here, were found yesterday after- noon not far from the body of An- derson, which was discovered. It is believed they got on the ice which was formed in the bay on Monday and attempting to crawl to shore, broke through. The bodies of Pettit and Ingersor were close to- gether, The young men attempted to cross the river {from Clayton, Monday. ANTHONY RANKIN HONORED BY TABLET IN COLLIN"S BAY Kingston, Dec. 29--Residents of Collins Bay Thursday, paid tribute to one of their most distinguished sons, the late Anthony Rankin, who was for 15 years a member of the Ontario Legislature, representing Frontenac County, when a tablet was unveiled in the village school housc by Dr. A. Dr. Ross, in his address, said that Mr. Rankin had been particularly interested in better conditions for the farmers; the extension 'of agriculture in Nor- thern Ontaric, electricity for the farmer, the broadening of the good roads policy, SINKS IN WATER : IN CLOSED AUTO Peterboro, Ont, Dec. 29--]John Winters, driving across Gannon's Narrows Bridge, between Buckhorn and Pigeon Coy. had the experience of being imprisoned in a closed car in 30 feet of icy water and lives to tell the tale. Winters' car struck an icy edge in the boards, skidded and leaped over the edge of the bridge, carrying him to the bot- tom of the lake. The window of his car was lowered and Winters crawl- ed out. Even then he was so chilled that he would have drowned had it not been for the arrival of T. Free- burn, who with his wife saw the accident and rushed to the rescue, pulling Winters to safety with a pole, JOINT MEDICAL OFFICE IN KINGSTON PROPOSED Kingston, Dec. 29.--Looking to- wards a joint appointment of city health officer and head of the De- partment of Preventive Medicine and Public Health at Queen's University, Dr. J. C. Connell, Dean of Queen's Medical College, has asked Mayor Craig for a conference, on behalf of the university authorities. Several years ago, Queen's inaugurated a chair of preventive medicine in the hope that the city might co-operate. The late Dr. A. R. B. Williamson, who acted as head of the City's Health Department for some years, favored such an arrangement, but the City Council decided that King- ston did not require a full-time me- dical officer. JOHN WINTERS NARRO ESCAPE FROM DROWNING Gannon's Narrows, Dec. 29.--John Winters narrowly escaped drowning in the icy waters of the lake Thurs- day when his car, which he was driv- ing across the bridge at Ganmon's Narrows, skidded 'on hitting a slip- pery ridge in the boards, careened to the side and leaped over the edge of the bridge. carrying the driver with it to the bottom of the lake to a depth of thirty fee. Fortunately for Mr. Winters the glass in the door of his car was low- ered and he managed to crawl out land force himself to the surface. Al- so fortunate for the man the accident was seen by Mr, and Mrs. T. Free- burn and the former rushed to his assistance. Mrs. Freeburn raised the alarm and quickly other men gathered and aided Freeburn in getting him to the safety of the bridge. He was carried to the home of the Freeburn's, which was close by, and there received first aid treatment, making a swift recovery. Neighbors gathered from the surrounding dis- trict and after Trojan pulling, the car was dragged from the bottom of the lake. Smith is home from Toronto for the vacation. We are very glad to hear that Mr, A. C. Elliott came very suc- cessfully through his operation and we all hope he will soon be up and around again. Miss Bernice White who has been working in Toronto is spending the vacation at her home here, ASHBURN Ashburn, Dec. 24.--The Christ- mas tree and concert which was held here on Friday night was a splendid success. The program which was largely provided by the children was much enjoyed, until Old Santa Claus made his appear- ance on the platform with his pack of gifts and after his usual greet- ing began to unburden the tree. This is an event that impresses itself upon both young and old and is looked forward to each year with, great enthusiasm. Miss Werry is spending a well earned holiday with her parents in Kedron. Mr. Milliney of Oshawa {is visit- ing at the home of Mr. Summer- hays. There has been a great slaughter of geese and other fowl in the neighborhood during the past week. Those who raised them are well satisfied with the price they receiv- ed. Miss Mildred O'Boyle of Toronto, spent Christmas at her home, The young people of the neigh- borhood enjoyed a dance at the home of Mr. Bill Burgess recently when the usual good time was en- joyed. Efforts are being made to have these dances every two weeks at different homes. A number of the farmers have been selling their grain to the ele- vator at Myrtle and a truck calls for it and hauls it away. School closed for the Christmas holiday last week and all that the children lack now is good ice, and a little more snow to have a real enjoyable holiday. Whyte's splendid Christmas ser- mon, Extra music for this service was a duet sweetly rendered by Misses Dorothy and Helen Pascoe. There are a few cases of the "flu" epidemic in this community. None. are serious, however. Judging by the pleased expres- sions on the faces of the citizens of this place, Santa Claus has had a busy time this year. THORNTON'S CORNERS Thornton's Corners, Dec. 26 -- Raymond Le Roy won a five doll- ar gold piece for first prize in the Art Class at the Collegiate Frolic December 27. The prize was do- nated by Mrs, A. E. O'Neill. Gordon Langmaid, who is con- fined to the Oshawa Hospital, is much improved. The annual school meeting was held on Wednesday evening in the Community Hall. Eli Pascoe is spending the Christ- mas and New Year's vacation with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Pascoe. There was no meeting on Friday evening of the Boy Scouts, due to the annual Christmas concert.
