The Ottawa Citizen says: "The matter has been brought to a head at the Archbishop's palace, of a num- ber of bishops, clergy and separate school officials from all over the pro- vince, when a committee was formed to deal with the question" Thé atitude of the Government has not been disclosed, but it is un- derstood that no such amendment to the Assessment Act is included in legislation now under way for the session, EDMONTON FLIERS BACK FROM NORTH Successfully Carry Anti Toxin to Stricken Settlements Edmonton, Alta., Jan 10--Frost- by the recent conference in Ottawa, SEGRAVE WILL TRY TO SET UP A NEW RECORD English Auto Racer To Try To Get Speed of 240 Miles An Hour Daytona Beach, Fla, Jan, 9.--The perfect sands of 'Daytona Beach, which have served as a speed course for the world's fastest racing cars, will be the scene of the international speed trials of Major H., 0. D, Se- grave, who hopes to set a new record of 240 miles an hour in March, William F. Sturm, American man- ager for Major Segrave, chose the Daytona Beach course as the site of the British speed ace's trials, after considering conditions at Ormond, Jacksonville and the Island of Sa- pole off the coast of Georgia, Barney Oldfield set the world on fire in 1910 by flashing down this beach at the rate of 131 miles an hour, Since that day, Burman, De Palma, Milton, Segrave, Campbell, and Ray Keech have broken that world mark in rapid succession, Keech, young Philadelphia speed demon, gave the world its latest mark to shoot at when he made his dash down the beach at 207.552 miles an hour. It is this record which Major Segrave hopes to break, so that the world honors may be re- turned to Great Britain. Major Segrave was the first man do exceed 200 miles an hour in a racing creation, setting a new world record in March of last year at 203 miles an hour. His new machine, the "Golden Arrow," is now under con- struction in Great Britain, It will be completed next month and brought to America early in February. ASKS DAMAGES LOST AFFECTION Toronto Worker Charges | Builder With Breaking Up His Home Toronto, * Jan, 10-- The Samuel L. Jessop, city builder, alienated his wife's affections under pre- tense of employing her in a real estate' brokerage business, is the charge made by Charles Nelson, Swedish caisson worker, in a writ filed at Osgoode Hall. Nelson claims $2,600 damages. Judgment, was reserved yester- day hy Chgfles Garrow, K.C., Mas- ter of Chambers, on a motion made on behalf of Nelson to strike out the defense filed by Jesson on the ground that the latter refused to answer certain questions during examination for discovery. E. B. Titus, for the defendant, contended that in this action Jessop was not nnder the necessity of answering the questions asked. Home Broken Up Nelson states that he and his wife were married in May, 1925, <he then being a widow, Mrs, Marte Chandelier. Jessop's association with her resalted in their separa- tion for a year but he, Nelson, had finally returned to her on the nromise to cease all relations with Jessop, In August, 1928, Nelson says, he discovered that Jessop had renewed his attentions and he charges adultery and the breaking np of their home. In his statement of defense, Jes- sop declares that he was associat- ed with Mrs. Nelson solely in a business way. She is Finnish, he explains, and he, heing then a real estate salesman, found her useful in introducing him to prospective clients among her compatriots. He paid her a commission for her ser- vices, he says. He declares that at no time did he conduct himself with her in anything but a proper manner, NO CONFIRMATION OF MERGER RUMOR Report, However, Leads to Upward Swing in Distillery Stock Toronto, Jan 10 Although need ed on the stock market to the ex- tent of occasioning a mild flurry, rumors of the merger of the prin- elpal distilleries of Canada failed to secure confirmation when they gained circulation. yesterday. The firm of Hiram Walker-Gooderham and Worts was mentioned as the central one in the mooted amalga- mation and its stock responded by an upward swing of six dollars per share. Responsible officials of the company, however, could not he reached to substantiate or deny the rumor, and in some quarters it was regarded as simply a maneouvre, by stock market operators to coun- teract the depressing influence of the anti-smuggling enference at present in session at Ottawa, On the previous day the Walker stock dropped $2.50 per share on the news of the Ottawa confer- ence, which was Interpreted by the market as a "hearish" factor. Around noon in 'yesterday's trad- ing, however, a New York despatch intimaféd that a merger was pend- ing of Canadian distilleries under the leadership of the Hiram Walk- er-Gooderham and- Worts concern, LETT, NICHOLLS AND HALLITT Real Estate Insurance and Loans. The plane had to be stopped far down the field. Breaking the police lines and overpowering those eiti- zens who would have stopped their mad rush toward the plane, close to 5,000 people started for "Wop" and "Vic". The plane was halted, the aviators were taken from their seats, hoisted to sturdy shoulders, and paraded a distance of 500 yds. to the hanger, where they had the opportunity to warm themselves before a blazing fire that had been especially built for them. Both left Edmonton Wednesday morning carrying with them 600.- 000 units of anti-toxin which was to be used to combat the spread of diphtheria at Fort Vermillion and Little Red River, where the factor at the former place had died and other people there: showed signs of suffering from the disease. {TB VERESTING EXAMPLES OF DWARFED TREES 13 TREE ARE CUT OFF AND ONLY THE IE canons OF iE Pant ARE FAMOUS FOR THER DARED TREES WKH ARE GROVH I MANY FANTASTIC AMD DECORATIVE FORMS.
