(11c) SLAUGHTER HOUSE T0 BE BULT NEAR FAMOUS CASTLE Thousand Cattle A Week To Be Killed On Beautiful Historic Spot London, Eng., Jan, 14. -- Con- siderable apprehension is felt at the action of the Eastbourne District Council in granting a license for a cattle slaughtering house on land adjoining the famous Pevensey Castle. Standing five miles from Eastbourne, Pevensey Castle is one of the most beautiful and historic spots on this part of the English coast. It marks the landizz-place of the invasion by William the Conqueror. The castle is a remark- able relic of Norman fortress work, the walls still standing high and strong, marking the place where Romans and Britons were alter- nately slain by the hundred, in the early struggle for the mastery of the southern portion of England. Only two years ago the Duke of Devonshire presented these ruins to the nation, and the Government- al office of Works is now engaged in putting them {into repalr. The proposed slaughter house, it is stated. would be built right und- er the walls of the castle and would cover some three acres. One thon- sand cattle per week are designed to be slaughtered there from the outset. "NONEY DOCTOR" LEAVES FOR CHIN Dr. Edward Kemmerer To Reorganize Country's Finances Princeton, N.J., Jan. 14, -- Dr, Edwin W. Kemmerer, professor of economics at Princeton University and internationally famous "money doctor," has left for New York on the first leg of the trip that will take him to China to reorganize the finance of that country. He will confer with other mem- bers of the mission to New York sailing from there for the Orient and then proceed to San Francisco, on January 18. Dr. Kemmerer has been asked by the Chinese government to placa ft on a modern basis. He will be accompanied by several other American experts on budgeting, taxation and currency. China is the tenth mation to which Dr, Kemmerer has been called to treat financial ills. In 1903 he served as financial ad- visor to the Phillippine Commis- sion, which resulted in the adop- tion there of the gold standard. Two years later he returned to Princeton and resumed his work as professor. Again in 1917, Dr Kemmerer wefit to put the finances of Mexi- co on a frm basis, since then he aided Guatemala, Colombia, Union of South Africa, Chile, Poland, Ec- uador, and Bolivia. In 1925 he was an expert on currency and banking to the Dawes Commission. Simul- taneously with the announcement of renewal of the Bell Company bill, G. R. Geary, M.P.,, of South Toronto, gives notice of a renewal of his bill of last year, but it goes much further. The bill previously introduced auth- orized the Railway Commission to inquire into the profits of the North- ern Electric Company, the Bell subsi- diary. The new bill will be broader and will empower - the Commission to look into the books and all trans. actions of any subsidiary of any tele- phone company. It will be recalled that, in the tele- Bell application for increased rates, the Railway Commission ruled that it could not inquire into the affairs of the subsidiary Northern Electric be- cause of not being possessed of the necessary jurisdiction, The municipal- ities opposed to the application ale leged that, in this subsidiary, profits are concealed. The Geary bill would empower the Commission to look in- to that or any other subsidiary con- cern of any telephone company. Willle--Did Mr. Edison make the firs: talking machine, Pa?
