Dreviously the bank charged a flat rate of $100 a year but its new rate comes as a result of a decision of 'the Canadian Don't Let That Cold Turn Into "Flu" That cold may turn into "Flu," Grippe or, even worse, Pneumonia, unless you take care of it at once, Rub Musterole on the congested parts and see how quickly it brings relief as effectively as the messy ol mustard plaster. Have Surplus The annual financial statement of the commission was received last night and will be forwarded to the town council, It was shown that all departments including light and power, water and sewer- dge, were operated with a surplus during 1928, with the exception of the Water Department which has a deficit of $600. The commission attempts to provide water at cost and this deficit is of course charg- ed to the town treasury. In the operation of sewers the commission find that it has a bank balance of $75 after meeting a small deficit from last year and re- turning $500 to the town council, Mr, Luke Presides In the absence of Mr, Van Valk- enburg, who was detained at his home through illness Mr, Luke presided over the meeting, Other members of the commission present included Mr, Every, Andrew M, Ross and Mayor Levi Dudley, who is a member by virtue of his office, SHAMROCKS PLAY BOWMANVILLE AT THE WHITBY ARENA Juniors of Motor City Have Had Straight String of Victories (By Staff Reporter) Whitby, Jan. 17,--Local hockey fans will be given an opportunity to witness another speedy junior O.H.A. encounter when the Oshawa Shamrocks play the Bowmanville Homebrews at Burns' Arena, to- morrow night. Yesterday, WHITE SHIELD CLUB HAS A BIRTHDAY AT BOWMANVILLE An Excellent Program of Sketches, Music and Recita- tions--Pastor Cuts Cake Bowmanville, Jan. 16.--The 7th anniversary of the White Shield Club was celebrated by a birthday party in St. Paul's school room on Tuesday evening, Jan. 15, at which there was a good attendance. The first item on the program was a negro sketch put on by Mrs. Hall, Mrs, Gould and Mrs." Blunt, which was extremely funny. This was followed by a dialogue entitled "Peach Ple," given by Mrs. Hall and Mrs. Blunt, There was also a recitation by Mrs. Gould. A pleas- ing pumber of the program was "Rhapsody in Blue." for 2 pianos, played by Mrs. M, A. Neal and Mrs. (Dr.) Clark Bell. After this two folk dances and a game were put on under the direction of Miss Peardon, in which all the members participated. Then came the in- teresting part when refreshments were served. On account of the spe- cial occasion, the usual menu was augmented by the addition of ice cream and a birthday cake, looking very gay with its adornment of candles which were lit by the first president of the club, Mrs, Fred Lyle, and the oldest member, Mrs. Mutton. To Rev. Dr. Best fell tne honor of cutting the cake. After all had done full justice to the splendid repast, the happy evening was brought to a close by all sing- ing the "Good Night" song. ucts, minerals, cod and molasses in dry form. Dr. Best is Elected President and J. H. H. Jury, Secretary ) ~~ {By Staff Reporter) Bowmanville, Jan, 16.--The an- nual meeting of the Horticultural Society was held in the Council Chambers on Tuesday evening, Jan, 156. It was one of the best annual meetings for many years and one of the promising features was the large attendance of ladies, The secretary, J. H, H, Jury, read a most encouraging report, At the end of 1927, the officers had to report disappointment at the small amount of interest displayed by citizens in the activities of the Society but the results for 1928 are much more encouraging. Mem- bership has increased over 45 per cent and there is a small surplus in cash with which some civic im- provement can be undertaken. Beautify Town Mr. Jury suggested that one way in which interest in the Soclety could be ereated would be the selec- tion of some prominent but un- | gightly spot and beautify it with shrubs or perennials. Reference was made to the great loss the society has sustained in the death of.A, Tait, who for 36 years, by his enthusiastic support and active co-operation, had been one of the most helpful members, The Society was urged to can- vass for membership among friends and neighbors in an effort to make 1929 the biggest and best year of the Society, Membership for the past year was 99 and it is hoped to double it, Ask Help of All Mr, Jury expressed his apprecia- tion of those who willingly and un- selfishly gave of their time and thought to the activities of the So- ciety, He also pointed out that if the Society is to render 'a real ser- vice to the community and do the work the government expects of it, more members will have to become interested actively in the work, not leaving it to a few. The govern- ment grant is given in accordance with the service rendered in the way of public meetings, flower shows, town improvements, ete, Too often if a public meeting is called, or a lecture given, some feel they perform their full duty if they come, others forget to come them- selves and neglect to tell their friends, Some members have as- sisted by not taking any bulbs or plants as premiums, while others did not take their prize money, and in this way there is a nice little surplus in the treasury for town beautification. It was suggested in the election of officers that care be exercised to select those who are interested in such things, also that at least six or eight ladies be on the Board. A motion was passed that the So- ciety hold another Community Day celebration along similar lines as those of last year, There will be another meeting held about the middle of February for which a very interesting pro- gram is being prepared. The finances of the Society were reported in an excellent condition and $75 was voted to be used for civie improvement work, The secretary was instructed to write a letter of appreciation tov Mr. J. A. McClellan for his splen- did work in connection with the society and expressing the hope that he would soon be back with them again, A letter of sympathy was also sent to Mrs. A. Tait.
