The Women's Missionary Soclety of Newcastle United Church held its first annual meeting of the New Year on Thursday afternoon last, Mrs. McLaughlin past 1st vice-pre- sident conducted devotional exer- cises and installed the new presi- dent, Mrs. (Rev.) Rogers. who then took charge of the installa- tion of the other officers. A short program followed, consisting of de- votional reading by Mrs. (Dr) J. A. Butler, introduction to Mission Study book "Drums in the Dark- ness', Mrs, J. C. Hancock and Miss Elizabeth Hancock, reading Mrs, Fred Graham; Solo, Mrs, J. E, Mat- chett, The treasurer reported $738, raised last year, $90 of which was rajsed by the Mission Band. Our allocations for 1928 was $720 and it was with a spirit of deep thank- fulness that one and all realized God had wonderfuly blessed us as a gociety during the past year, The new life members were received, Mrs, John Douglas and Mrs. Floy Butler, Mrs, Rev. W, Rogers, Mrs, J. C, Hancock and Mrs. George Al- len were apopinted as delegates to the Presbytery, Rev. W. P. Rickard formally installed the 1929 Officers and 'Veachers, of the Church Sunday School at the regular Church service last Sunday morning. Owing to sickness and in- clemency of the weather a number of the staff were absent, but the following were present and by in- vitation of the pastor took seats in the front pews of the church. London, Jan. 26.--For the first' time in its long and romantic his- tory, the Mother of Parliaments to- day faced the diverting problem of a woman's hat, Or, to be pedanti- cally accurate, the problem of a wo- man without a hat. Mies Susan Lawrence (Labor, East, Ham, North), was the victim, As a Labor member, Miss Lawrence had been taking a prominent part in the House of Commons debates on the Government's Derating Bill, especially in regard to its effect on social services, Usually Miss Lawrence appears in the House without a hat, and therby hangs the tale. The House had swung its spright- ly way through the questions and had resolved itself into a committee of the whole on the Debating Bill, As the clauses under discussion was called Miss Lawrence rose to speak.
