(40c) WAR IS REFUTED United Fruit Company Offi- cial Denies Knowledge of Struggle Saint John, N.B., Feb, 16. -- De- nial of any knowledge of an im- pending banana war in connection with the trade from Jamaica as suggested in recent accounts in the press, was made here by I. E. Ward official in charge of sales for the United Fruit Company. Mr. Ward said: "I am unaware of any im- pending banana war, The United Fruit Company has been selling bananas in Canada for 30 years. The Canadian market is growing, and it is only natural that we should bring in an increasing amount of fruit, '"As regards shipments, we shall probably bring fruit into Saint John the same port we have always used to a certain extent, with the excep- tion that more bananas will come to Saint John in Canadian ships be- cause it will be absolutely impos- sible to ship through all the other channels which have been used in the past, and which will be closed by the duty. "My company applied to the Can- adian National Mercantile Marine for space on their ships. No answer was received to our written com- municatién, and after three months Late yesterday the notice was post- |, space, but only after we had d indirectly that space would e to be applied for in Jamaica. "The United Fruit Company has always shipped its own fruit. There is no question in my mind, however to | that if we have sufficient fruit to sell and markets are available, we will be glad to take space on the Canadian Merchant Marine boats, provided proper arrangements for handling can be made and freight rates are satisfactory. "We are glad to see a closer re- lationship between Canada and the West Indies, and do not anticipate any war on account of the establish- ment of new services." TORIES TO ASSIST RAILWAY Victoria, ¥eb. 16, the house intends to assist the pas- sage of the private bill to extend the charter for H. H. Stevens' Canadian North Eastern railway, granting it rights to tap the Peace River country, despite the effect this would have on the future of the P.G.E., was given Thursday by Hon. R. L. Maitland, K. C. Mr. Maitland was complaining that the Liberals did not give Mr. Stevens the credit and co-operation he was entitled to with regard to his grain elevator in Vancouver. "You're making up for that by giving him a railway," lan Macken zie shot across the floor. "If we do," replied M land, "it will be built and e than the P. G. E. Snder the Liber- als." Oxgers Promptly Delivered CONVENTION OF COMMUNISTS IS PLANNED FOR APRIL Toronto, Feb. 16.--Secretary John Macdonald of the Communist Party of Canada announced yesterday that the biennial convention, which was to have been held in March, woul be postponed until April, Differen- ces over policy which led to the expulsion of Chairman Maurice Spector have no bearing on the de- cision of the party to delay its con- vention, according to Macdonald. "Spectator has no following," dec- lared Macdonald. "In Toronto the group which he leads does not amount to more than a dozen men and women, all of whom are from the Jewish section. He is receiving no support from Communists throughout the Dominion. We a not concerning ourselves i opposition," In several cities of th States differences between ists supporting Stalin an: Sc agitating tsky have resulted in fights, necessitating police intervention.
