Thus, this season, the bill of fare is reduced to four pre- sentations, but, with one exception, these run a fortnight instead of only a week. The opening bill was Maeterlinck's Blue Bird, a quite factory performance, followed month by Sean O'Casey's Juno and the Paycock. After Easter An- tony and Cleopatra will be present- ed and each of these performances is for two weeks. 14 In March a week will be given to plays by Canadian authors, pro- bably three one-act dramas. This is. in accord with custom and some very brilliant work has been devel- oped by the theatre this way, bring- ing to the notice of the public sev- matists. The question has been ask- ed why doesn't Hart House, now un- der the able direction of Carroll Ai- kins, produce a full three-act play a Canadian dramatist, and the an- swer probably is that no such play has yor beep written worthy of £ill- ing bill for a week. This month's production of Juno and the Paycock measurers up to the highest standard. It has been described as the epic drama of the Irish civil war and it has been said that-its presentation, first of all se- cretly in a barn, did more to bring the Irish people of the south to their senses, more to stop the civil war, than any other agency whatso- ever, And that may well be, for un- der a curtain of humor lies all the tragedy of those bitter years from Easter Week of 1919 to the last shot from behind the last dyke some half dozen years later, The story of Paycock and of Juno his wife, and of their children, is the epitome of Ireland's woe, And it was writ- ten by a common laborer, in whom was the stuff of poets, brought out by the agony of those days. "Edu- cated in the streets of Dublin" says the biographical note he contri- butes to Who's who. Recreations: everything except work.' A hum- orist you will note, a man indeed of cosmic wit, Hart House Theatre is fortunate in a company of players that is at all intents permanent--it would be a mistake to think jt is recruited in any large measure from the stu- dent body--and this corps of dra- matic artists from time to time sends a recruit to the professional stage.
