RECALL WRECK OF VESSEL IN NS. "Princess" Louise Had Just Been Launched When Storm Was Encountered Amherst, N.8,, Mar, 4.--Many of the older residents of Cumberland County can recall how the schooner fresh from its launching at Maccan 1883, went ashore two miles east of Point Prim, near Digby, N.S, in a blinding snow storm, leaving on- ly two survivors of a crew of ten, The schooner, a vessel tons, was launched on a Saturday It was planned to tow the new shp to Halifax, fit it witn sails, and sail it in cargo to Eng- land, where preparations had been on Dee, 1, of 600 *with auxiliary The Princess Louise, in command of Captain Brown, R.N., was towed down the tortuous Maccan River to Wood Point without mishap. At Wood Point, the Government steamer Newfield, a small iron ves- gel, attending lights and buoys, picked up the tow early Sunday morning, using a two-inch steel hawser, During the trip down the Bay of Fundy, a storm was encountered, The wind steadily increased, reach- Ing the proportions of a hurricane when the two vessels were off Dig- by Gut, Captain Gilford, of the Newfield, dared not risk entering the narrow channel leading into the Annapolis Basin, and carried the tow in circles for a time, hop- Ing the storm would abate, The wind increased its force, however, and the newly launched schooner, with only a few tons of ballast aboard, tossed like a cork, Finally Captain Gilford decided to head across the Bay for Saint Jo went two or three miles agalnst the full force of the gale, when the hundred and twenty foot hawser snapped close to the bitts of the A snow squall was rag- ing, and the Newfield disappeared from the view of the schooner. Crly a few miles off Je dangerous lee shore, Captain Brown tried 'to hoist the sails in order to wear off the coast, but without the upper spars no rigging could be improvised during the storm and the vess:l driit- ed closer to the rocks, Then an at- tempt was made to anchor. The chucks were knocked out from the chains, and the anchors permitted to run free. The chains had not been fastened, however, and the crew were horrified to see the ends whisked through the hawse holes and into the ay. At four o'clock in the morning, with the hurricans still raging, the schooner struck the rocks and in- stantly piled on her beam ends. Ri- chard C. Soy, of New Glasgow, now a district deputy inspector under the Nova Scotia Temperance Act, who survived the disaster together with James A, Daine, of Halifax, was at the wheel. When the schooner struck, members of the crew jumped forthe rigging and were clinging to the lines as Soy moved forward to secure a similar position, It was the last he saw of his companions, excepting Daine, the cabin boy. A gigantic wave swept aver the ship, broke in the hatchway, and washed the young helmsman, who had just reached the age of 21, into the hold of the ves- sel. His forehead struck some ob- ject, inflicting a deep gash, which left a long scar he will always carry. He found Daine in the, hold, and for hours they remained there while the schooner was being torn to pieces. After davlight the two youths man- aged a difficult and perilious passage to shore. The weather was bitterly cold, Four inches of snow covered the . They | ground. The young men, in their icy garments, sought shelter Soy sup- norting the almost helpless , Daine through the woods, The latter col- '"psed and Soy pushed ahead for as- sistance. He discovered a farmhouse Br agit SEE LETT, NICHOLLS AND " HALLITT DISNEY REAL ESTATE Specially priced --$4,500-- $100 cash payment, Bal. ance as rent, New 6 room stucco. Central. Of the eignt men lost from the Princess Louise, including Captain Brown, five bodies were washed a- shore, The remaining three were never recovered.
