Tel- egraph poles were snapped and miles of wire ripped away, disor- ganizing service in many districts. Trains in the north crawled behind plows thru' heavy drifts of snow, arriving hours late at their destina- tions. Fires fanned by the high winds took on threatening propor- tions and the brigades in many cen- tres experienced an anxious day. Three Lives Claimed Only three actual fatalities had been reported from the province last night, but a number of narrow escapes from death and disaster were accompanying factors of the 50-mile gale. In Goderich, Herbert McLean, lash down a roof against the rav- it to his death fifty feet below. Half the roof had already been torn away when with another man he made the perilous venture. The two men had hardly started opera- tions when a strong gust lifted the remainder of the structure. His the wall of the building, Blinded by the blizzard, Joseph Yeo,, C.N..R section man at Lon- don, was struck by a train a few miles from the city. At Port Col- borne the frozen body of an Italian workman lost in the storm was re- covered from the Welland canal. Coming out of the northwest and varying in intensity from 50 to 60 miles an hour the storm struck .western Ontario. on Wednesday night, increasing in inwasity auring the early hours of this morning. In London, Windsor and Hamilton, windows were shattered, trees rip- ped up by the roots and barns in the surrounding areas torn to pleces. In West Hamilton a fire ball was blown down and com- pletely wrecked. At the same time the east end fire department was answering a call on the east end of the mountain where flames breaking out in one of the houses threatened to sweep over a Wadle district. Family Almost Suftocated The entire wall of & uviick rest- dence in London fell inwards pe- fore the force of the wind, tons of debris being precipitated into the bedroom vacated a few moments before by the family, The wind tossed away the chimney of a house in another district and the family narrowly escaped suffocation rrom the resulting coal gas fumes. The residence belonged to 8. Naylor, 77 Edward street, who was awak- ened early in the morning by the coughing of his granddaughter. He gave the alarm and the family of five were removed from the house. They are recovering. "WHAT IS A GNOME?" The class had just been given a talk on fairies, and at the end of it, to find out how much they knew, the teacher asked: "What is a gnome? One bright child answered. "Please teacher, an 'ouse."--Yorkshire Post, GOL. STEWART IS OUSTED IN FIGHT IN STANARD OIL Rockefeller . Interests Win Battle for Control--New Board Named Whiting, Ind., Mar. 8.--Colonel Robert W. Stewart lost his long- fought battle yesterday with John D. Rockefeller, Jr, to retain his $125,000-a-year position as chair. man of the board of the Standard Oil Company of Indiana. Colonel Stewart went down to a defeat even more decisive than had been predicted by the Rockefeller group, which had demanded his resignation because of alleged "moral anfitness," but he left the annual stockholders' meeting with the plaudits of the record gathering ringing in his ears. Post Abolished The post of Chairman, from which Colonel Stewart was ousted by more than 2,600,000 votes, was abandoned by the new board of directors which met immediately after being elected. Edward G. Seubert, President of the corporation, was re-elected and magn chief executive officer. He will take over the duties of Colon- el Stewart, whose successor on the board is Willliam M. Burton, form- er president of the concern. New Board's Personnel The new board of eleven has three additions--Melvin A, Tray- lor, President of the First National Do YouOwn Your Own Home Real Estate Insurance ard Loans. Puone 8254 # King St. East, Oshawa manager of the Whiting Refinery, and Thomas 8. Cooke, former Sup- erintendent of the Whiting plant and now a Vice-President of the Pan-American Petroleum and Transport Corporativ.. The slates presented by the Rockefeller faction and the Stew- art supporters were identical, with the exception of Colonel Stewart, Mr. Burton and Mr, Traylor. Tray- lor was named on the board to suc- ceed Louis L. Stephens, who, al- though defeated as a director, was retained in his position as general counsel, The Board of Election Inspec- tors reported that a total of 8, 446,120 votes had been cast. The exodus of farm hands to the cities is given as the principal cause. The population is now equally divided between the cities and the country. The decline in agricultural prosperity is ascribed by the farmers to export restrictions and a low tariff. on the other hand claims that since Real Estate Insurance CUTLER & PRESTON 64 KING 8ST. W.
