Phones 1. and 660 [) BOY WAS RESCUED FROM HUGE SHARK Farmer's Heroic Act Wins Him Royal Humane So- ciety Gold Medal Ldéndon.--The Royal Humane Society recently awarded the Stan- hope gold medal for the bravest deed of the year to Andres Muller Heyns, aged 39, a farmer of Mount- hope, South Africa, for going to the rescue of a youth who had been seized by a shark, In the official account of th deed Jt was stated that on Decem- ber 78, 1927, Andres Heyns was bathing in about five feet of water at Little Brack beach, Mossel Bay, South Africa. There were other bathers in the water, among them being several children, Ockardus H, Heyns, a student, aged 17, of the same name,g but no relation of Andres Heyns, and W, A, Gericke, "Suddenly," the report continu- ed, "Gericke noticed a dark object approaching Ockradus Heyns, He gave a shout of warning and Ock- radug, noticing the shadow as well, began swimming towards the shore, But it was too late, "To everybody's horror, the shark was seen to seize Ockradus and drag him some distance out to sea, where he was out of his depth, Gericke saw the water turn red and hastened ashore to get a life line, Heynes, however, went straight to the rescue and never hesitated, although the monster was still circling slowly round the blood stained patch of water, Al- though absolutely exhausted by his efforts, he dragged Ockradus into shallow water and carried him a- youth's left leg had been bitten off mpletely crushed, e was hurried to Mossel Bay Hospital, but died the same night, "The shark, which was after. wards caught and killed by local fishermen, was 14 feet 7 inches long and weighed 1,675 pounds, Heyns' heroism was officially brought to the notice of the soc- aA by the city of Cape Town."
