de $AGE FOURTEEN THE OSHAWA DAILY TIMES, FRIDAY, MARCH 15, 1929 SH 400 SEDAN se 1 dal. TT THE NA One of the i pany is offering to the public thisyear. Kenosha, Wis., Mar. 16.--Dla- Mond dust--one romantic and high- ly valuable element seldom asso- ciated with industry--is -now ex- pended freely in bringing modern motor cars to mechanical perfec tion. Today, every Nash "400" crank- shaft that moves along the famous recision production lines of the ash plants leaves a small residue of diamond filings behind it. This precious dust is worn away from the diamonds used in "truing up" the grinding stones for each seven- bearing crankshaft that is turned out. Valuable Stones Throughout the Nash factories, thousands of dollars worth of dia~ monds are used in the various op- erations requiring absolute accu- facy. These stones--the hardest substance known to man--are dark in color and possess high commer- cial value only; but they are pro- tected and cared for as jealously as any twinkler in a society jewel case. When the new stones are select- ed by Nash experts, they are weigh- ed and their characteristics and his- tory are listed on regular forms, which are filed in the well guard- ed diamond safes. Each day, the stones are checked out to factory workers, and each evening they are carefully checked into the vaults again, Their records resemble the Bertillion system in completeness and detail, Although the use of diamonds is but one of many special precision methods employed along the fam- ous Nash straight-line production system, their functions and handle. ing constitute one of the most in- teresting and at the same time lit- tle known operations in the fascin. ating process which turns raw ma- terial to finished cars in the great factories. Mounted in Steel The stones, some of them rang- ing from one to six karats and cut to varying edges as required, are mounted in removable steel bars which fit into the grinding stone assemblies or in other machinery where the hardest cutting edge is el = ONE OF THE NEW NASH MODELS = which the Nash Motor: Com- | demanded. In turning out the crankshafts, the grinding stones--- i themselves much harder than steel --must be absolutely true at all times. Thus, when each "400" crankshaft {s completed to its re- quired perfection, the stone must be made true. It is then that the diamond is employed by expert workmén, ' Another vital function of these stones ig the precise boring of pis- ton pin holes. Their dimensions must be true to one ten-thousandth of an inch, and their character de- fies. precision tools of lesser strength than the diamond. As the stones wear away to sizes tao small for the shop tools, they are dismounted and broken up for use in the harder polishing proces- ses. The dust is scattered into re- lceptacles filled with olive oil anu |the bigger diamond particles filter through to the bottom while the finer dust floats on the top. The dust thus graded is salvaged care- fully and used in polishing mix- tures. Challengers Meet Essex the Challenger dat HOCKEY STAR FABOR "Reg" Noble, the big defense man of the Detroit Cougars, who is idolized by Detroit fans, not only for his superb playing but for his splendid sportsmship, is seen here with his new Essex the Challenger, At the wheel of the car is Miss Joan Noble, who seems to be as ardent a motorist as she is a hock- ey fan. "Ebbie" Goodfellow stands with his foot on the fender. He is the leading scorer in the Canadian Pro- fessional Hockey League and will probably show his stuff in the big leagues next year. Both men will appear in the hockkey play-offs. It has been said that the Canadi- an Hockey players who went to the United States to show how hockey THE CHALLENGER IS played, have done much to foster goodwill between the two countries, They play the game for all they are worth, harder, in fact, thin many amateurs. When penalties are in- flicted there is no arguing with the officials, tempers are seldom lost, and the game is on a higher plane than any other professional sport in the United States. THE NEW DURANT LINE OF MOTORS FEATURED BY MORE POWER AND SMOOTH- ER PERFORMANCE Specifications of the New Models Show Many Worth While Features The new Durant line of four and six cylinder automobiles will include the Durant "Forty", the four cylinder series, and the Dur- ant "60", and "70" of the six cylinder series. The Durant "Forty" models in- clude De Luxe Four Door Sedan, Pe Luxe Coupe, Four Door Sedan, 'Two Door Sedan and Coupe. In the six cylinder series the Durant "60" appears as a Spesial Sedan, Special two door Sedan and Special Coupe, and De Luxe models can be secured in all of "these. The Durant "70" has a special Sedan and special Coupe and De Luxe Models. All Durant cars are powered with Red Seal Continental Motors which this year contain a number of refinements and improvements that add greatly to their power and speed. The Fours have an en- closed fly-wheel and other advant- ages emanating from the labora- tories of Continental Motors Inc., the largest exclusive motor manu- facturers in the world. More power and smoother per- formance are attained because of the improved non-détonating type motor head, and all motors, of 'course, are rubber mounted. The Transmission The transmission is built "mid- ships" for accessibility and a greater factor of safety results from the exceptionally heavy con- struction of the axles, the same type and construction as used on much larger and more costly cars. Long, flexible springs with Try-on shackles, shock absorbers front and rear, Chromium plate, rust proof screws and high pres- sure lubrication, are some of the features to attract attention, There is a new running board moulding which is formed to blend with the fender beads, making a continuous stream line effect from front to rear. New type steering wheel mater- ial makes for lightness and is quite a distinctive improvement. The steering itself, is much easier and the complete radius of the turn is made smoothly throughout. The steering principles and equipment are the same as that used in the most expensive cars, Wide roomy doors and spacious interfor add to the comfortable features of the Durant "Forty". The upholstering is of exception- ally high quality, being all wool, end pile, worsted. The cushions are deep and very comfortable, Attrac- tive color schemes in the latest Duco combinations are to be found. The Durant "60" The Durant "60" has a 109 inch wheel-base with tiffs 29 x 5.00. These ears are very handsome in- deed and have a new type hood with raised panel louvres, and a new piano-type hinge. The attrac- tive color schemes of the Durant "60" are quite original and the upholstering is a combination of Mohair and Worsted. 3 body makers have again provi deep cushion springs and ample body room, with wide doors that are an added advantage. Considerable emphasis is placed upon the fact that the Durant "60" motor has a 2% ioch bore and 4-3-4 inch stroke. The stroke is therefore longer than usual, and gives the Red Seal Continental Motor more power and speed whils making utmost smoothnses an ad- ditional attribute. The Lynite Inva Strut Pistcns dare of the same quality as fourd in the most expensive automobiles. It is noted also that the axles are of Molybdenum, nickel and Chrome Vanadium steels and here again is another big car quality feature. The Durant "60" has a new type hood, Chromium plate throughout and shock absorbers front and rear. - With four forward speeds, cap- acity for 80' miles per hour with ! ease, 70 horse power motor and built-in radiator shutters, the Durant "70" is certainly one of the finest automobiles in the whole realm of motordom. The four speed forward trans- mission is an exclusive Durant de- sign producing a silent internal third speed and a double high fourth speed. This exclusive feat- ure has three outstanding advant- ages namely:--Performance, econ- omy and convenience, It makes driving and riding a new and finer experience, greatly reduces the wear and tear on the engine be- cause it eliminates roar and re- duces vibration to the absolute minimum, Because of this feature the life of the car is increased, oil and fuel consumption is reduced - by 20 per cent and engine roar by 40 per cent, The front compartment {is in- sulated against cold, heat and noise while the new and impres- sively designed radiator has built- in shutters that are controlled according to the driver's wishes. Extra heavy, well braced frame and extra heavy axles, long springs for easy and safe riding, over-sized wheel bearings, two-stage muffler and twin beam headlamps may be cited as contributing to the ex- cellence of the Durant "70", The very best of hardwood Is used throughout the body while the door handles and all other hardware have a pine cone design that is quite exclusive, The new, straight line {instru- ment arrangement whereby they are grouped in the panel of Butler finish is in keeping with the luxurious comfort of the wide, roomy bodies with their form {ite ting cushions. OLD EMBLEM RETURNS ON DODGE CARS The original radiator emblem of interlaced triangles now on hun- dreds of thousands of Dodge Brothers cars throughout the world has been placed on the radi- ator of the New Six announced by the company. Wings have been added to the emblem to represent speed and grace in addition: to. de- pendability ard ruggedness ~ for which Dodge cars have earned a world-wide reputation. Refinements in Design Have ments Have Given Distinguished by advanced styl-? ing, and with improved perform- ance characteristics, the refined Oldsmobile is being introduced this season at new and lower prices. Desirable improvement without radical changes feature this' latest Oldsmobile product, while the symmetrical lines, silenc- ed chassis and powerful motor which have earned high recogni- tion with the motoring public have been retained, The complete line of body types now consists of seven standard models, all available in special and de luxe types. The line contains a landau sedan, four-door sedan, two-door sedan, sport coupe, busi- ness coupe, sport roadster and sport phaeton. Price Reduction Coincident with the announce- ment of the new added features in Oldsmobile, a price reduction has been made, The new low prices are in keeping with Oldsmobile pol- icy of giving the motoring public the advantage of increased produc- tion and further modernized fac- tory facilities. Added refinements in design and appointments have enhanced the appearance of the Refined Olds- mobiles. These include slightly lar- ger headlamps supported on chrom- ium standards; a new heraldic crest on radiator with the name plate removed to an artistic cross- bar connecting the headiamps; a new cadet type of visor; the use of sheet metal shoulders instead of fabric finish and an advanced de- sign of radiator shutters. An ev- en finer grade of mohair uphol- stery, adjustable front seats and like refinements have increased the beauty and comfort of the in- teriors of isthe Fisher built closed bodies, New and distinctive col- or combinations have been select- ed. New Beauty These additional features have resulted iu new beauty, particularly to the head-on appearance of the Oldsmobile, The headlamp sup- ports and the cross bar bearing the Oldsmobile name plate are chrom- fum plated, giving an added touch of brightness. A touch of color is given the chromium plated radia- tor shell by the new jewel-like me- dallion which typifies the charac- teristics inherent in Oldsmobiles. The new cadet visor is designed to harmonize with the distinctive curves of the hood and cowl, Manufacturing refinements and a few mechanical improvements have resulted in greater horsepow- er. The high compression engine now develops 62 horsepower and this added power has brought a corresponding increase in perfor- mance. x One of the major mechanical ad- vancements incorporated in the 1929 Oldsmobile is found in the fully machined, rifle drilled con- necting rods. This drilling per- mits lubricating oil to be sent un- der pressure direct to the piston pins, giving the Oldsmobile full pressure lubrication. This feature heretofore has been a characteris- tic of high priced automobiles, Other Improvements Other mechanical improvements include an adjustable fan pulley and a new improved steering gear which provides easier handling in traffic and parking. A mineral wool air cleaner has been adopted instead of the centri- fugal type. Exhaustive tests show that this style air cleaner does mot restrict the air flow to the carbur- etor at any engine speed, thorough- ly cleansing the air of any foreign matter. A larger carburetor is used for added efficiency. Crank- case ventilation, ofl filter and gaso- line pump ang filter are retained. An improved adjustment of the clutchiand brake pedals affords ev- en smoother action. Both pedals are equipped with rubber pads as additional driving comfort. These pads also minimize the chance of the feet 'slipping off the pedals while driving. Adjustable front seats, a new de- velopment by Fisher, are used in all closed models. These seats can be moved forward or back to suit the convenience of any driver, short or tall. The adjustable front seat, combined with the adjustable steering column, which has long been an Oldsmobile feature, as- sures absolute driver comfort. ; Subdued Another change is the use of a subdued green light for the indi- rect lighting of the instrument panel. Tests have proven that this colored light is the most restful to the eyes in night driving and at the same time fully {illuminates ev- ery instrument. An automatic windshield wiper which automat- ically returns to the top of the windshield and it rigidly held there when not in use is standard equipment, Several changes have been made in the coupe models. The sport coupe, with rear drop seat is be- ing made with a metal top instead of the fabric formerly used. 'The top is so designed that the rear window can be lowered when the drop seat is being used. The doors of both the standard and sport Coupes have been widened 3 1-2 inches, making the total with of the doors 34 3-16 inches, material- ly increasing vision as the door post 'now is well back of the driy- er. : Chassis Equipment The silenced cahssis includes. 4- wheel brakes, four Lovejoy hy- draulic shock absorbers, engine rubber mountings of special de- sign and a fully insulated rubber- ized felt lined partition between the engine and front compartment. Equipment on all models includes radiator shutters, gasoline guage and engine temperature indicator NEW OLDSMOBILE PR OVIDES REFINED AUTOMOBILE AT REDUCED PRICES Enhanced The Appearance * of This Year's Models, Whi'e the Mechanical Improve- Greatly Increased Power LORNE ARDIEL Sales Manager of the Cadillac, La- Salle and Oldsmobile division of the General Motors of Canada, Limited. : on dash, stop light, rear vision mirror and twin beam headlights, and rear fender guards, specially designed for Oldsmobile, are regu- lar equipment on all models, SMART RADIATOR DESIGN The front view of the Superior Whippet shows the smart new radiator design, giving all the ap- pearance of speed and litheness.
