Designed to be a luxury car in the low price field, the new Pontiac Six-- bigger, fleeter and smarter--is dis- played at the Automobile Show. Heralded' as a "big" six, the: new Pontiac measures up to, its name offefing a wide and flexible: perform- ance range, and distinctive Fisher bodies styled to please an exacting ul y The new line provides not only new body lines, but a car almost entirely new. Major features of the chassis and body all have been redesigned or enlarged to bring the car, in per- formance and smartness, into the big car' field. An engine more powerful than a year ago, with 200 cubic inches of cy- linder displacement and developin| 57 horse power; the addition of a har- monic balancer and counter-balanced crankshaft; larger valves, manifold and carburetor; sturdier rear axle; redesigned transmission = assembly; and 'new Hotchkiss drive with two universal joints are among the chassis improvements" that = make possible quick, - vibrationless acceleration and high top speed. In the beautiful new longer and wider bodies, craftsmen of the Fisher corporation working in conjunction with Pontiac engineers have wroyght a unique arrangement of lines and unusual style touches that give the finished car an appearance totally unlike any other now on the road. A full side view shows to best ad- vantage the striking lines of the new car. A new, pleasing concave belt _moulding starting at the cowl and completely encircling the body, and a high waist line effect, distinguish the Fisher bodies. This moulding is not continued down the hood, but a new curved pillar line, runs from the cen- tre panel on the cowl down to the rear of the hood. A smart new louvre grouping sets the car instantly apart in traffic. In- stead of in the conventional manner, louvres all are grouped in one panel and extend horizontally across the hood. The Fisher closed bodies all have adjustable driver's seats, smart new sun visors of all-metal construction, tilting beam headlights operated by foot control, ebony-finish instrument panel with individual mounting and illumination by two shielded bulbs, smart elliptical windows in rear, [ slender ebony-finish steering wheel and deep luxurious upholstery in solid colors harmonizing with the new and beautiful exterior Duco combinations, All exposed bright parts carry a brilliant chrome-plated finish, Among such fitments are a cowl bar mount- ing two parking lamps, larger hub] caps, radiator shell and vertical cen- tre bar, head and tail lamps, top hood hinge, and radiator and gasoline tank filler caps, The proven cross-flow radiator, with its anti-evaporation tendency, first introduced to the public just a year ago on the 1928 Pontiac Six, is retained this year, with the core re- designed to conform with the new high narrow arch of the chrome-fin- ished shell, A chrome-plated bar ex- tends vertically in front of the cen- tre of the core. Water control by a thermostat built into the cylinder head also is retained. A unique feature of the new car is the absence of a name plate in the conventional position on the radiator shell, While the familiar "Chief Pon- tiac" emblem is still carried on the radiator filler cap, the name of the car nowhere appears except on the specially designed running board mats, On all models form-fitting spring covers which, by keeping dirt from contact with the metal, assure free- dom from squeaks and easy riding can be secured at slight extra cost. Four Lovejoy hydraulic shock ab- sorbers, and front bumpers and rear fender guards are regular equipment. Springs have been widened this year to two inches, Length of front and rear springs totals 90 inches, qr more than 80 per cent of the wheel- base of 110 inches. Smart low wheels of the heavy ar- tillery ten-spoke type, with large hub caps and flanges, take 29 by 5.00 non- skid cord tires. Special equipment consisting of six wire or demountable wood wheels and tires, with spares carried in front fender wells, are available at extra cost. Seven models comprising the line are a 4-door sedan, 2-door sedan, sport roadster with folding "rumble seat, sport phaeton, coupe, and two new types -- a custom-like landaulet sedan with a folding top over the rear quarter section for all-weather driv: ing, and a convertible cabriolet with rumble seat. Provision for integral bumper mounting is made on either end of the heavy tapered frame with its five rigid cross members, Front fenders, full crowned and with a beaded edge, sweep out wider than a year ago, and centre directly over the wheel for in- creased protection against splash. The enlarged power plant renders wonderfull flexible performance, bringing the new Pontiac into the big car class while remaining within the price range of the small six, The larger engine develops 57 brake horsepower at 3,000 revolutions per minute, and has a cylinder displace- ment of 200 cubic inches as against 186 last year, Both bore and stroke have been enlarged. LEGAL FRATERNITY FROM WINNIPEG EVADES REPORTERS Los Angeles, Calif, Mar, 16.-- Cloaked in deep secrecy, six mem- bers of Winnipeg's legal traternity, were to arrive here Wednesday af- trenoon to record the evidence of A, W. McLimont, former president of the Winnipeg Electric Company, in regard to the lease of the Sev- en Sisters Manitoba power site. Keen interest nas been taken by Los Angeles newspapers in the Royal Commission, and hard work- ing emissaries of every local daily have been placed at several sta- tions where the commissioners might arrive, No information will be given any of the California papers, R. D. Guy, K.C., counsel for the Winni- peg Electric Company, declared Wednesday. The restriction of publicity here is at the request of Mr, McLimont, now a resident of Southern California, To frustrate photographers in their intended attempt to obtain pictures of the arriving Wininpeg- ers, a ruse has already been plan- ned by Mr. Guy, who purposes to divide the legal party into two sec- tions on its arrival. They will be hyrried to their hotels and a conference will decide further movements, 4 1-2 Prince for your ] AUTOMOBILE ° long if any of these misfortunes should bef We write all types of automobiles insurance. Real Estate and Insurance J. C. YOUNG St., Oshawa Phone 793 ; OAKLAND SIX The fenders which these two young ladies so gracefully adorn are those of the new Oakland Six, Olympic series, A front view of this striking gar ted centre stanchi large r ls the attractive n ow y P headlamps and low, modish, lines which have made it a favorite at the motor shows, Its improved power plant more than lives up to its appearance, The latest Oakland Six, Olympic series, displayed at the Automobile Show, reveals mechanical advances that are sharing the limelight with its new body lines, The new car boasts more than fifty refinements. A quick mechanical picture of the new Oakland shows a larger and fleeter power plant, a new Bratented rubber engine support, new Oakland- developed internal expanding self- energizing four-wheel brakes, larger cross-flow radiator, counter-balanced crankshaft, larger three-port intake manifolds, and unique lubrication of cylinder walls, Built on a 117-inch wheelbase, the new power plant developes 68 h.p. at 3,000 revolutions per minute, Cylin- der displacement today is 228 cubic inches, increased from 212 cubic in- ches last year by enlarging the bore to 33 inches from 374 inches. Stroke remains at 474 inches, : The engine has a high compression G.M.R. head which may be removed without interference with the ignition, and with a built-in thermostat. A feature of 'the bead is a semi-circular baffle located directly above the pis- ton which is claimed to give maxi- mum freedom from detonation, Com- prassion ratio is 49 to lL. The power plant is mounted on four supports and insulated from the frame by rubber "biscuits," develop- ed by Oakland engineers. By decreasing the size of the hexa- gons in the new copper core of the cross-flow radiator, increased cooling is provided, while thermostatic con- trol has been an Oakland feature for the past few years. A new and larger vertical type car- buretor has an accelerator pump and economizer. The improved intake manifold is of the three-port type, with riser heated by the exhaust from all six cylinders, and a heat con- trol valve so located as to carry ex- cess heat away from the driver's com- partment, < The larger oil pump circulates 166 imperial gallons of oil an hour at 25 m.p.h, as against 83 imperial gallons in the old pump. The AC gasoline pump and fuel filter combined in one unit is used, while the new AC air cleaner consists of copper ribbons moistened with oil, and is said to provide practically 100 per cent, air cleaning, reduce fire hazard and ei- fectively muffle carburctor hissing. A pressure feed, of special design known as the regulated constant flow type, provides oil to the main, con- necting rod and camshaft bearings. To insure adequate lubrication of cylinder walls, pistons and pins at all times, a plan has been devised where by a cross groove in the bearing registers with the oil hole in the crankshaft and with notches in both ends of the bearing. Oil is sprayed on the cylinder walls through these end notches. Other refinements in the power plant include a redesigned fly-wheel with a shrunk-on steel ring gear, meshing with the starter pinion of the Bendix drive; improved parking brake, and an improved universal joint for simpler installation and as- sembly. The reverse Elliott front axle is re- tained, but the tie rod tube ends now carry right and left hand threads, making possible wheel adjustment without removing the rod. New four-wheel brakes, company officials say, are of special Oakland design. They are the mechanical self- energizing type, internal expanding, operating on twelve-inch drums, with a two-inch lining and a total breaking surface of 290 square inches, A new frame with provision for integral bumper mounting and with six sturdy cross members is used for the first time this year. All models are equipped with new small di ter artillery wheels with ten large spokes, 8 inch hub flanges and steel felice to take a 19 by 4 inch rim. Tire size remains the same a 29 by 5.50 oversize for Ooakland weight. The rear tire carrier has two drop forged supports, while spare on the phaeton and roadster els are car- ried in front fender wells. Hudson Motor Co. SAFETY RULES IN GAR DRIVING Over 25,000 People Lost Lives in Automobile Acci- dents During 1928 In 1928 over 25,000 people lost their lives in automobile accidents, and approximately 200,000 were in- jured in motor vehicle accidents. These victims, passing four abreast in columns would form a parade forty miles long, and would take fourteen hours to pass, In their campaign against bad brakes, which are responsible for a large percent- age of accidents, the engineers of the Russell Manufacturing . Company have issued the following rules for safety in driving. ' 1. Don't drive with a steering wheel which has excessive play. The 'steering wheel should have about 1% to 2 inches of play. If it has more than this, have it tightened at once, 2. Be especially careful about back- ing your car, A car approaching from the rear may not notice that you are backing. Look carefully before you start in reverse gear. 3, Don't try to beat traffic signals. Even if an officer is not on guard, other people are going by the signals, and they expect you to do the same, 4, Have a windshield wiper that works. You can't see what you are doing when your vision is obscured by a rain-covered windshield. 5. Drive with both hands on the steering wheel, 6, Don't drive with lights that blind on-coming cars. The other fel- low isn't always the only one who is at fault on this, Check up on your own lights every once in a While, 7. Make sure that your brakes are safe by having them inspected at least every thirty days. | fERVICE Those do tires and tubes.
