I THE OSHAWA DAILY TIMES, FRIDAY, MARCH 22, 11929 ~ PAGE TWENTY-NINE These are ideal bags for general wear Flaborate F abrics and Details Mark Fashions This Year The: perennial return of Spring is the annual signal for Mr. Man to infuse a touch of color into his furnishings. This year is no exception, hues and patterns taking on a somewhat more festive tone without extend- ing to the flamboyant effects of oth- er years. Leading manufacturers and retailers concur in the opinion that the present season is to show, paradoxically, a mood of subdued . cheerfulness. , Favor Colored Shirts Although white shirts in oxfords and broadcloths are still in popular demand, the trend is definitely in favor of colored shirts, Pastel shades of blue and tan are most widely prevalent, being closely ri- valled by striped effects. The fab- rics are plain madras, broadcloth, nd end-on-end, largely with a num- er of others by no means omitted. Pinned and tab colo?cmfwypcm favored by men who take their fash- lon hints from London. The tab shirt is featured in blue with a three inch collar. What Neckwear Offers Stripes are the thing in Ties. Cluster strips and "Grecian" or figured stripes will supplant some of the small figures prevailing last winter. All-over wrap effects are in considerable vogue likewise; any pattern savoring of the loud or bla- tant is discountenanced by the pre- sent mode. In crepes and baratheas colors will be offered in wine shades, garnets, greenish blues, browns, pale blues and canary. - Tips on Sports Wear Plain, solid colors will predomi- solid nate in sweaters, the crew neck, round neck and V-neck. models ranking in popularity in the order named. In golf hose, likewise, pastél shades will be dominant with the Argyle plaid Hose also featured. Patterns in knickers will be quiet and simple; these garments will be presented in tweeds and Shetlands. Sports jackets will be fashioed or tweed, leather, corduroy, sheepskin and chamois. Those of the latter are the latest thing, with three-button front and belted back. Outing trou- sers will be of gray and white flan- nels, some with thin stripes. Riding breeches will be made of stout whipcord. Underwear and Pajamas Shorts and shorts finds increasing favor as underwear, the latter fre- quently pr ted in multicolored stripes. Pajamag are offered in the slip-on and jackets styles. The Rus- sian side button pajama is expected to find its advocates, also. An ex- ception to the current conservatism in tone is shown in the pajamas for the younger fellows, where brilliant colors and dazzling designs predo- minate. - In gloves, pigskins promise to hold their ascendancy with cape- skin, buckskin, mocha, calfskin and goatskin also runnig strongly . . bright colors in suspenders are manifest with bold patterns consid- erably in demand among younger men, . . 0dd jackets of Harris tweed, single preasted, in the three- botton effect with the buttons set close together, and with small notch lapels will be worn for informal use . . . Silk mufflers in gelf col- ors and in small, neat unobtrusive checks, stripes and squares will Revo with light overcoats. . . en's hose preserve the status quo as regards style. - + "The Ensemble Idea The copious use of color in men's furnishings for Spring lends added impetus to the ensemble idea that increases in popularity year by year, Indeed some merchants now sell ensemble. combinations -- sets of ghirt, hose, handkerchief and tie in the same hue, or containing a similar design motif, Further the added use of such shades as laven- der increases in distinctiveness the effect of the ensemble. . RED LINGERIE APPEARS Not since the days of red flan- nels--which this generation regards as highly .comic -- has red been sponsored for lingerie. Yet bright red is one of the newest colors to, be seen in lingerie and its use is traceable to the ensemble mode. With present-day short skirts, light or colored lingerie is apt to be an inharmonious note in the red costume, it is said, and as a consequence, new lingerie in bright red georgettte and ninon is mok- ins its appearnce in the market. COAT LENGTHS Looking over the fashion field, coat lengths seem to decide their own fates. But their's a differ- ence between them for the dis- cerning woman. Very short jackets and boleros are excellent for the very young. Cardigans are for suburban wear, for sports and for utility, such as shopping suits. o Finger tip jackets are best for the older or larger woman. Three-quarters coats help short- en the tall woman's figure. Long coats slenderize. Our Easter * Showing of Fine Hand Bags and . QUALIT | Will be found in our line of LADIES' "HAND BAG . WIDE CHOICE Splendid Range of Fabrics Include Several New Weaves The fabrics from which spring gar- ments are fashioned are most import- ant this season, . 3 There is as much diversity of media as there is departure in cut. It prom- ises to be a spring of multitudinous materials of unusual and interesting weaves and coloring, : The importance of fabrics of course grew out of the simple styles which are now being abondoned. With the straight up and down lines, the beau- ty of material was essential. From this insistence on lovely stuffs to fashion clothes {from has grown a real appreciation of fabrics. Never have women thought 'more about the goods that make their clothes. Materials Are Many The result is that there are innu- merable new and fascinating mater ials upon the market., The soft, plia- ble, flattering woollens from Paris, like the Rodier cloths, are now sup- plemented by similar ones from other houses. Novelty flannels, jerseys with lacy designs, men's suitini weaves, dark backgrounds threaded with open-work designs in light colors, silk-patterned worsteds, smooth glos- sy woollens, crepes of sheer wool sprinkled with color or thread pat- terns, and dozens of other brand new woollens are now available for jacket suits, coats, tailleurs. Of silks it is hard to say anything adequate. For silks have gone gor- geous and extremely individual, in coloring, weave, texture and pattern. Soft ribbed silks, varying from graceful failles to the ribbed silks from China that men's suits are made from are very good this spring. Pcb- bly silks are also. Morocains, printer] ottomans, foulards, figured and check- ed georgettes, silks with linen weaves, alpaca, toiles and lovely and unusual printed smooth silks in designs from Chinese motifs to quaint wall-paper prints are all found ready for the fastidious woman who likes her things beautiful and a little different, d Combinations Linens, ginghams and various co:- tons in fine and lacy weaves are used in conjunction with wools and silks for spring outfits, It is not unusual to find a handkerchief linen blouse in, say, chartreuse shade, with a blue transparent worsted suit. The colors 'used this summer can depend upon one's type, to large ex- tent, While evening clothes choose their color somewhat with regard to mate- rials, it is safe to say that off-whites, especially pinkish tones, greens, char- treuse, red and a clear light blue will perhaps lead in popularity, Purchase With Care In choosing the spring wardrobe, since new fabrics and new colors { must be tried out, the safest thing is |e buy things one at a time, filling in carefully the wardrobe one has planned. This entails having certain good looking garments as a basic start to- wards that perfect wardrobe every woman wants. Perhaps a little suit is the best start on earth. Then a dress and jacket or a dressy ensem- ble and a sports ensemble might be the' best next choices. All must be selected with care to fabric, color, design and line, - A little trim suit that would be an ideal first choice for spring is a Scotch tweed in black and beige nov- elty herringbone design. The skirt is twice new--first because it takes a tuck-in blouse with it; second, be- cause it is gored and each seam is overstitched to emphasize this impor- tant fact, The jacket his a scarf collar as its only closing and on warm sunny days this scarf falls open, showing the beige silk blouse with a round yoke [{ an fine tucks running out from it. With this the best choice for a first spring hat is a little velour coronet chapeau, with a flaring brim that rolls up from the face and sweeps the neck in the back. . Striking Ensemble Next comes a serviceable and stun- ning ensemble of embroidered wool crepe jersey topped by crepe de chine. The color scheme is wool browns, with gold and silver threads making an effective pattern amongst the browns on the one-piece dress; This dress is belted and its neck binding ties in a sweet bow. The coat is rather straight line, with bands of embroidery for cuffs, shawl collar and pockets, ; he hat for this is a light brown rabbit felt, with a curtain drop back. The back tapers to bandings in front which cross at one side effectively.' These are edged in darker brown. FLUTED PEPLUM A black figured moire, with gold stars, has its overblouse peplum long and tight through the hip- line, then flare smartly with a |f three-inch flyted edging. PARISIAN CONTRAST Three new Paris hats embody the unmatched color idea. A black felt clocHe is lined with beige fur; a red Shaved felt has its side brims and narrow front lined with black long-haired plush and bright blue . hatters' plush lines a rabbit rest in deep navy. ORANGE FUR London produces a new sports model of moleskin coat, dyed bright orange. Brown moleskin fashions the flaring collar, deep cuffs, belt and pockets. Highlow Heel The newest winter shoes have a Cuban heel that is really a highlow, being as smart looking as the very high heel of last summer, and yet low enough to give the foot real sup- port, ol The new hand bags are being feat- ured in leathers. and color combina- tions that will harmonize with the costumes that are to be worn this spring. The designs, too, have been affected by the recent trends in both suits and dresses. More detail is ap- parent and more than usual attention 1s' given to the frames, handles and the use of applique work. As regards sizes, the new bags are, if anything, slightly maller than those of previous seasons, although they cannot by any means be called tiny. Various versions of the pouch shape, new envelope . treatments with back straps and top strap handles, and the frameless pouches are noted, as well New Handbags More Important; Many New Weaves and Colors as the square-shaped bags mounted on sturdy frames, A frameless swagger leather pouch bag is being featured as part of the new suit ensemble.' It is soft and wery flexible, and has top strap handles of the same leather. A natural wood frame is used in one of the season's smartest hand- bags designed to complement sports costumes. The clasp or fastening consists of a wooden button with a revolving shank, which, when the bag is closed, fits into an oval groove. The little shank is made with fine in- lay work in dark colors. The handles are silk cords, which are - pulled through holes in the frame. In addition to having a unique frame the bag also has a novel body. The sides, where most of the wear and tear is most likely to take place, as well as the bottom, are made of soft kid, while the centre panels are of wool exquisitely embroidered in striking colors in modernistic themes. The backgrounds are either in natural colored wool to match the frames, or in one of the soft beige tones. Red, black, green or vivid blue are often used together, or sometimes black is used with just one of these colors. Another bag showing the use of wood for trimming come in a me- dium size flat pouch shape and is decidedly tailored in its finish, It has a single back strap handle attached at an angle. The front flap, which is of medium length, has a band of stained wood in inlay work of an In- dian design. Another very similar model is made with a top frame of this same wood and an extra flap which conceals a separate pocket. for the colors in which they come either match the new shoe shades or blend exceedingly well with new fab- rics. i Jeweled Strap The best gowns affect one jeweled strap and then, as if to make it prec- ious, have the other one of the gown's material, It is the left strap which is usually the jeweled one. If you will heat the food chope per until very hot in boiling wat- er before running raisins through it you will find they will not stick to the blades of the grinder. A daytime frock of green and white striped asperic has its collar made very femininely, with a tie and ends, and then uses mannish cuffs with cuff buttons of silver, set in semi-precious green stones, {: moderate!
