PAGE THIRTY THE OSHAWA DAILY TIMES, FRIDAY, MARCH 2°, 1929 ~ERST TDS ON robe much in the manner of the wise investor in the stock market. She, like the person who plays the stocks, realizes that she must consider her purchases most carefully . + + « for there are just as many highways and byways in the fashion market as there are in the stock market. There are just as many reasons, too, for sudden changes in the mode, but these can be forseen if one has an idea what to look for and how much to consider the rumors and tenden- cies that are afloat. How often have you seen a new style launched and seen it quickly bought up by eager spectators? How often have you seen this particular style sent soaring to the heights of popular favor? Some women buy their clothes conservatively and wisely . . . . but even these do not always find their investments gilt- edged. : That is why we have taken the lib- erty this season of appointing our- selves your fashion brokers. For you we have scoured the fashion markets, . { 'The wise woman of fashion goes' 1 about investing in her spring ward- a % judging the mode from this angle and d consulting with stylists who are in on the ground floor on fashion's tenden- cies for spring. We have secured some very important information for you, which should be especially help- ful when you start investing in your spring wardrobe. So we suggest that you read this resume of what is des- tined to be good for spring and make your 'selections according to your good judgment. New Ideas in Coats Let us begin with the coats. The straight line coat with or without fur is the important coat for spring. This will be good news to women who tend toward stoutness, as the straight coat has a slenderizing effect that every woman loves no matter what her proportions. There 'are' those, of course, who like the feeling of flares and fulness and for these fastidious women the designers of Paris have introduced the flared silhouettes in coats along modified Princess lines. In spite of the fact that every woman is not interested in costumes with the Princess feeling, we cannot deny that' it has quite an important place in the mode for spring for we saw it in all the shops as we took our fashion jaunt through them the other ay in order to be able to give you first hand information as to what is new and authentic for spring. It is our guess that regardless of the fact that scarfs played a very im- Scarfs Again Important portant role in the realm of fashion for spring last year, they will be very important for spring this year for «1 spring shions there is something delightfully youth- ful and flattering about the flare of a scarf about the throat and women seem loath& to disregard this fashion fétare simply because a year has elapsed since it was introduced so successfully. Spring would not be spring for some women unless it included in their wardrobe at least one coat that was cnhanced by. a cape. Perhaps that is the reason that in the stores we saw such new and amazing ways of treating the cape. De saw capes that extended to the finger tips and capes" that only came to the elbows and capes 'that were slipped down the back and capes that appeared only off one arm, leaving the other one out in the cold. Furless Coats Are Smart Do you remember how hard the furless coat fought for favor last spring and summer? This year it seems bound to be accepted by the wise woman of fashion. We have a feeling that women are. tired of fur on their winter coats and would like this delightful change which the fur- less coat undoubtedly affords. Nevertheless fur trimmed coats are much in evidence in the spring col- lections in the shops, It is expected that fur trimmed coats will be se- lected by a majority of women, but at that there is always place for one furless coat in any woman's ward- sobe. : About Fabrics and Colors And now we would like to tell something about the fabrics and col- | ors in the coats. In the family of} woolens, kashas without a doubt take the place of first importance in the coat realm. The always practical and always smart tweeds hold second place, with twills and suede fabrics] following closely. It seems to us that the stores are expecting a big silk coat business this spring, if a nun ber of coats they are showing this' present moment is any criterion. Sat- in is the leading material in the silk coats. Silk crepes come. second, and then there is bengaline and moire. Some of these coats are developed in simple tailored fashion so dear to the heart of many women. Others intro- duce flares and godets, inserted plaits and many other interesting new ways towards producing the flare, silhou- ette which is so exceptionally smart 'I shades. Next in line comes the blues Easter. wear and the formal func- tions of spring that follow, There is no getting around the supremacy the tans and black hdld in the coat realm, for both are prac- tical and both are flattering. Black, of course, is especially important be- cause of kasha and because of the coats that are made of silk. Tan is' excellent for coats that women select with little frocks to match, thus mak- ing their own ensembles and because it goes so well with spring colors and in all their glorious shades. And then, of course, we saw many stunning grey coats and some luscious greens and grilliant reds that took our eye. Flat Furs in Favor Flat furs are apparently more strongly in favor than long haired furs in the case of fur tri d coats wool crepe coats also. aunted separate scarfs. Frocks Feature Color It is difficult for us to tell you about the new frocks they are show- ing for spring without immediately stressing the importance of color in the mode. No longer do we see the veiled greyed over shades that have been so popular for several seasons. past. The new colors _are clear and bright and are designed, to bring out all the gaiety and charm of this youngest season of the year. Blue continues upon its merry way and will be much worn for spring daytime and evening occasions. Some of the new bright dark blues that are 'being introduced for spring are "Jeanne D'Arc," which is the delight- ful street or travel shade. Then there is "Sailor Blue" and "Riviera" and "Moat-Blu" and all gorgeous ter len : These and among the short haired furs that Paris has evidently . approved for spring, the shops in town sponsor caracul, ermine, died squirrel, galyac, and died lapin. The ncck treatments on the new coats attract interest for them are one sided affairs and are often on only one side of the coat. One coat we noticed was a black broadcloth and velvet was used to trim this coat in the manner of fur and somehow we felt that it gave it even a more elaborate effect than fur would be selected by those chic wo- men who are so stunning in black. You will be pleased with the variety of neck finishes this scason. These are carried out 'with fabric of the coat or another harmonizing fabric, Unlined coats received such a grand reception at all the southern resorts this 'winter that without a doubt they will be one of the most important for spring wear both in town and country. These little coats are three-quarter length as a rule and are very smart of corduroy in the gay high shades to be worn with frocks of matching pastel crepes. We in a silk coat, and so desirable for noticed quite a number of three-quar- their ingenuity. A good many of |W, di dark blue shades. Then those slate blues that were launched so successfully by Patou for southern wear during the past winter season are being introduced in stunning frocks for spring. There is Curfew, and Meridian and Matins. e saw one stunning frock in an afternoon shade called Lavande, an- other Patou color made especially be- coming by its mauve cast, while Phyl- lis is a light but lovely shade in a new evening color. Beige is a very important shade in frocks for spring also, especially when it is' combined with brown. There is' a new beige shade called Moon-Gold. It is. a lovely warm shade and particularly smart when combined with brown. The woman who likes red will have little difficulty in satisfying her_de- sire for her dress wardrobe for spring. We saw several smart frocks that were entirely of red, others of red combined with black and white and navy and white with touches of red for the third color, following the three color arrangement made fash- ionable by Chanel. . Frocks of yellow appear in all the important new fabrics and yellow ap- 7 pears again combined with green chartreuse tones. This is another col- or that lends itself beautifully to combinations. We noticed it was used often with black, white, navy and slate grey. Printed Silks Are Gay Printed silks have become classic of the mode and never have they been more beautiful or gay than'they are this spring. The frocks that we saw for formal wear had small all- over effects and combine all the new colors, .the greens, mauves, yellows and blues on dark or light back- grounds: Printed silks in three colors continue. to be very smart and are particularly effective in such com- binations .as black, white and red; navy, white and red; or in navy, beige and. red, in patterns which fea- ture cross hatch effect, A lot of interest is being mani- fested in the use of necktie silks for one or. two piece frocks for travel, street and sports wear. These silks use the same small geometric designs that one finds on the rich cravat silks that are imported from 'London, They are exquisitely soft and supple in weave and, of course, are to be had in all the leading fashion shades. We saw one very stunning ' model brown and yellow and orange com- binations and another in lovely shades of blue. Enough about color. Some very attractive models have clever touches of embroidery and one we noted had a frock of beige geor- gette and the little jacquette was beige lace. Flat Crepes For Frocks vi Flat crepes are the leading frock fabrics and yet we have an idea that these will be outdistanced in the race for. popular favor by the old reliable georgette. This-is the material that has not received the fashion impor- tance that is its due for several sea- sons past, but is being splendidly re" vived for spring. There are chiffons, satins and the ever popular printed silks. For the. first crisp cool days of spring there are frocks of sheer georgettes, woolens, wool crepes, in voiles, and open work basket weaves being most generally used.. Feather- weight weaves are also very good and these are disputing for a place in the mode. A Word About Ensembles - The ensembles are back this spring and it seems as if every frock is tak- en unto itself with jacket or coat of some description or other. Coats vary in length from the hip to the hem line with the two extremes struggling for supremacy. Every woman with the youthful boyish figure will wear a shot jacket outfit, presumably in a print, a plain crepe, or combina- tion of the two. It makes little dif ference for all are fashionable and all are smart. The prints are so unusually attrac- tive and can be worked up so suc- cessfully in these ensemble costumes that there is little doubt of their fashion acceptance. Nevertheless the designers have made some very in- teresting costumes combining two plain colors in the manner of the new mode and sometimes three. Then oth. ers develop ensembles of two or more materials, - BATHING SUITS New bathing suits for southern wear are intricately cut and stun. ning in color and design. One has a tuck-in top of white crepe with straight shorts of white satin bor- dered with a modernistic pattern of triangular inserts in every con- ceivable pastel shade. An orange coat, white lined, tops it. YOUTHFUL CHIC Following the old fairy deserip- tion of 'blue jacket, red cap and white owl's feather" g new skating outfit has just that. The jacket is camel's hair, the cap a red ber- et with a cute little white feather jauntily stuck through it. A pleat- ed red skirt completes the outfit.
