A. Ruddick," Domin- ion. i Conimissioner, told the ag- ricultural and colonization committee of the House of Commons Thursday, one and one-half cents over that of other countires manufacturing the same type. Improved conditions for handling ing its consumption in. its natural form. The milk was being taken from the Cheddar cheese industry there, and the Canadian cheese was supply- the resulting shortage, eat quantities of Canadian cheese were now being purchased by cable on the grading certifi¢ates. This was ers in our grading system. Package cheese had become im- portant in the industry. One firm y 0 500,000 pounds a month into United States markets. The diversion of milk from butter making to cheese making had reduced production of the former to the point plus. Canada had a per capita con- sumption of 28 pounds of butter a year which was the highest in the world. The demand for butter had led to New Zealand butter actually being imported from London with the full duty of three cents per pound being paid.' In future the Canadian butter industry might again be in a position to export, but it should be INSULATING BUILDING BOARD WARM IN WINTER COOL IN SUMMER ' DISTRIBUYED BY OSHAWA LUMBER COMPANY LIMITED OSHAWA, ONT. CUTLER & PRESTON 64 KING ST. W. ! Telephone 572-228 Night Calls 510-1560 7 agreed that it was very difficult to get as good cheese in a Canadian store as is sold to the public in Eng- land, ; Mr. Spence suggested that there should be a regulation, in the inter- ests of the cheese industry, to pre- vent immature cheese being sold here, Dr. Ruddick took the view that it remembered that in that case there would be a drop in price to meet in- ternational markets. Butter was be- ing sold at present at a price as much as 14 cents above world prices. In answer to Thomas McMillan (Liberal-Huron South), Dr. Ruddick said that freight charges on butter were four shillings sixpense and to London four shillings. In dealing with the condition of the dairy industry in Canada, it was necessary to consider all products rather than any particular one. Ac- count must be taken of actual milk production. In 1927 milk production was 14,112,064,240 pounds, The val- ue of all milk products in that year was $276,000,000. , Thus the dairy in- dustry was of about equal importance to the mineral industry. Confidence was exprissed by Dr. Ruddick that New Zealand would never be able to displace Canadian leadership in the cheese markets of Britain, Canada is producing splendid cheese which is meeting with great favor in the British market, yet it was impossible to go into the ordin- ary grocery store in Canada, and buy cheese unless it was in packages. This was the contention of David Conservative member for Dr. J. A. Ruddick while not pre- pared to go as far as Mr. Spence, would be difficult to enforce such a regulation, ANCIENT PLAYS ARE PRESENTED -- / Stockholm, March 26. -- The thea- trical season in Stockholm has this year been characterized by the pres- entation of a number of interesting plays, new to the Swedish state. "Volpone" is at present offered at the Oscar's Theatre, which is admir- ably conducted by its managing direc- tor, the well known actor, John W. Brunius. The success of this theatre is certainly also due to the striking settings' designed by the well know Swedish artist, Isaac Gruenewald, famous for the brilliant color effects he achieves, Out of Stockholm's thirteen thea- tres, the leading three, the Royal Opera, the Royal Dramatic Theatre-- both of which are subsidized by the REDUCED TO $5,200 6 Booms and Attic. .
