FITZMAURICE 10 VISIT NEW YORK Well Known Irish Aviator Will Advertise Port of Galway Dublin, March, 25--~Col. James Fitz- maurice, trans-Atlantic flier, left for New York on Saturday on a visit to various cities in the United States and Canada in the interests of Irish aviation centres. , Fitzmaurice, who was co-pilot of the airplarie Bremen on the first westward trans-Atlantic *flight, will concentrate on presenting to shipping companies and other interests. the slow but certain approach of the day when regular trans-Atlantic air travel will be established. : At the same time the former Irish flying chief will emphasize the geo- logical intermediary stopping place for all flights between erica and Europe. Fitzmaurice's trip is spon- sored, for the most part, by the port of Galway, and he will present that city as the ideal point for refueling pl | in trans-Atlantic service. JOHN STACEY 1S "HONE FROM TRIP (Continued from page 3) nomination to which the people of that particular settlement belonged, Most of the houses had but one room and were roofed with earth which both sheds the rain and acted as an insulator from the heat. iles of Stone Walls Miles and miles of stone walls marked the country. The old walls of Jerusalem were still standing, said Mr. Stacey, and were evidence of an astonishing amount of work, The gardens on the side hills were held by retaining walls, holding the earth from washing away and separating them from the neighbor's 'garden. Sheep raising was still the main industry, and shepherds with their flocks could be seen roaming the hills of the land which knows no fence. An interesting note was that the sheep were of the fat-tailed variety. In the productive season the sheep accumulated on the end of their tails a large lump of fat' that served to provide them with nourishment dur- ing the severe dry season when the pasture became sere and dry. Hogs were unknown in Palestine, and cows were scarce, The supply of milk and butter came from goats, which were driven along the streets of the vill- was sold by men who walked the village streets with goatskin bags. The chief trees were the fig and olive, Mw. Stavey said. [Fuel was scarce, and the garbage of the vill- ages was taken out to a barren place, dried on the rocks, then brought back and used on the hearths as fuel. In the villages, the stores presented an uninviting appearance, and the mer- chandising methods appeared slovenly in comparison with the western world, Visit Biblical Places During their visit to Palestine, Mr. and Mrs, Stacey visited many of the places referred to in the scriptures. The Dead Sea, they found, was a beautiful sheet of blue water, about 40 miles long by 10 miles wide. It was clear, with gravel shores and without a weed. The Jordan river, flowing into it, passed through a brushy, wide valley from the Sea of Galilee. The tour followed by Mr, and Mrs, Stacey took them from New York, via the Madiera Islands, to Gibraltar. Then they went to Aljesiers in Spain and Algiers in Morocco. Monacco, where the famous Monte Carlo was located, to Nice in France, and Nap- les. 'While in this city they took the famous Milford Dnive, said to be the most beautiful automobile drive in the world, and saw Mount Vesuvius, which was however showing signs of activity and could not be climbed. Then they went to Athens, Greese, Constantinople, the Galipoli penin- sula, and Palestine. After a tour of Palestine they went by train over the tracks laid by Genkral Allenby, through the desert to Kentara, on the Suez canal, and Cairo in Egypt. On, this railroad, men were employed shovelling sand as Canadians shovel snow in the winter time, to keep the track clear. After seeing the pyra- mids and the sphink and taking a short trip up the Nile, they returned by Alexandria, and Naples to New York. Except for the sea being some- was in every way a pleagant one, said Mr, Stacey. : MAN IMPRISONED INPIT EIGHT YEARS Moscow, March 25.--A story of an eight-year imprisonment of a son by his father in a pit near their hut in the village of Savchukovo, Eursk province, was brought here Thursday. In 1918 young Tarasoff joined the Red army and three years later re- turned to his native village filled with enthusiasm for the new order. His reactionary father told him, "the Red army marches against the Czar and you must not serve in its ranks." According to the report one night old Tarasoff dug a deep cave in his rden and, binding his son.hand and oot, threw him into the pit apparent- ly to keep him there until the return of the old order. Recently the father died and the villagers, chancing upon the hving grave, extricated the worn wrinkled man who, although only years of age, had snow white hair. ) Ia hospital, ¢ was said to have been placed in ages and milked at one's door.
