It is a good {illustration of the modernization of the whaling in- dustry, that, while a few years ago it took from three to four days to flense one small whale for 60 to 70 barrels of oil, the newest float. ing oil factories are capable of flensing up to 15 great bluewhales for 1,600 barrels of oil in a day. This invention totally revolutionized hunting, as: the .0ld method of the whaleboat and the hand harpoon was very in- | efficient against the swift and dan- gerous "fin" whales. With the shell harpoon, which explodes in the body of the whale, the catch- fng possibilities have increased tre- mendously. In 1918 Norway had only eight whaling companies, with a total output of 147,000 barrels of whale oil, working. Now the whaling fleet includes about 75 ships and tank capacity' of more than a mil- lion barrels. These numbers will be increased, as numerous vessels and several large floating factories are now be- ing built or rebuilt in Norway, Eng- land, and elsewhere. One of Nor- way's whaling pioneers, Mr. Lars Christensen, of Sandefjord, reckons that the number of whaleboats con- trolled by Norwegians is 114 and that this number from next sea- son will increase to 148. This means that the catching will in- crease substantially. The question of increase is mnat- urally of great importance to Nor- way and preparations - are being made for new scientific studies of whalestock and the much-discussed problem of whale extermination. It the expansion of the last few years is continued, Mr. Christensen be- lieves that the consequences may soon be serious for the whaling in- ry. Jury t Factory The floating factories are the latest type of ship used for the "mass destruction' of whales in the Antarctic. The largest of these, of 20,000 tons, is being built by Messrs. Workmen™ Clark Ltd. (1928), of Belfast, at a cost of £275,000. These ships have a com- ment of .about men, Pl When a whale is killed the car- case is inflated by compressed air to prevent its sinking. It is then towed back to the parent ship. Here it is hoisted inboard by der- ricks or hauled by the tail through special ports of about 18 feet diam- | eter made either in the bows or in the stern. 'Special derricks and winches for ealing with the carcase, possibly + feet long, are provided capable of hoisting 30 'to 40 tons. In great steam-heated boilers on deck the blubber is reduced to oil and "grax." The oil is stfained and stored in tanks; the "grax" is boiled again to extract still more oil, before the residue is blown overboard by steam or compressed air : Spermaceti for ointments is ex- Prettily Trimmed Straw Hats for Girls There is an exceptionally good selection in this Special offering. Perley Re- views Efforts to Abolish : War SPEAKS AT LACHUTE Dominion in Splendid Posi- tion to Aid Work of Keeping Peace Lachute, Que., April 19.--The objects of the League of Nations were discussed at length by Sir George H. Perley on Sunday morn- ing in an address from the pulpit of Lac¢hute United Church. Sir George urged the people fo support the League heartily in its efforts to prevent war. War, he pointed out, had always been the means of settling quarrels between nations, but in the League of Nations there was seen a con- certed effort by a number of coun- tries to do away with this barbaric method of settling international differences. "But how is it possible to accom- plish this," he said. 'The League is in no sense a superstate. "The League cannot stop all wars and disputes, but it has already settled peacefully disputes between Finland and Sweden, Poland and Lithuania, Albania and Serbia, which under ordinary conditions would have meant war. Probably the greatest thing thus far accom plished by the League is that na nation, however strong, would now declare war without first having the question in dispute discussed by the League, because public op- info nis overwhelmingly in favor of the settlement of all disputes by conciliation. "This is the first practical and honest effort to substitute reason for force in the settlement of dis- putes between nations, as we have done btween individuals. For our own safety we must make the Lea- gue work. Some peopl may say Canada is not intersted. No na- tion can any longer maintain a pol- icy of isolation... Telephones, ca- bles, aeroplanes and the radio have brought the world much closer to- gether, and we are all affected by what happens in othér countries." By her geographical position as well as her strong representation in the League, Canada was in'a splendid position to help the Lea- gue in this work," he concluded, ~ {"and it was well for the people of Canada to link up with this work and support it."
