MESSAGES TO MARS ARE VERY AMUSING Thirst for Knowledge of Other Planet Seen in Competition London, April 22, -- The Martian intelligentia would have had a busy week had all the messages sent in by competitors in the recent Manchester Guardian competitions have been promptly put on the interplanetary wire. . Most of them showed compre- hensive and almost voracious desire for knowledge, although only a very few offered to supply information about earth in return. One reader, indeed, modestly requested the Mar- tians to "tell us everything about yourselves," but the majority specified the particular points on which they desired information. One competitor wanted to know if the famous mark- ings were "canals or canards"; an- other the possibilities of interplanet- ary traffic; several sought informa- tion on wave-lengths and more than one added to a general inquiry the not impertinent question, "If you do understand our messages, why not be sociable and answer?" One suspects that a young reader asked, "Are you clever or are you not?" and it was left to our youngest competitor, aged full seven and a half, to ask the one decisive question, "Do you eat?" nm -- c---- The merely scientific spirit, how- ever, did not predominate. There was a largely represented view that it would be interesting to know of the Martian religion, and a disposition to communicate a few hints as to our own. Still more represented was the view that.the Martians, being super- ior beings, should send down useful information at once--an excellent idea, though one was hardly prepared for the note of personal despair in some of the messages. A couple of score of competitors wanted a cure for cancer, and blindness and rheuma- toid arthritis were also the subject of what one, alas! has to believe not quite disinterested inquiry. A few competitors, apparently distrusting earthly science, sought Martian aid for the King. Work for Workless Still more asked for a remedy for unemployment, and there is food for thought in messages like these-- Can you absorb 1,200,000 unemploy- ed? Thousands would make splendid canal diggers; wage a living wage.-- One of them. Any work up there? I have nothing to do but read the Evening News. If you can find 2,000,000 jobs, and know how we can get to your planet, tell us quick. Have «vu a place fit for heroes to live in? We have 1,000,000 willing to come in a body. While the whole situation is sum- med up by one competitor thus-- If amongst your sages there be one capable of setting this earth right, let him do it, in God's name. Several sportsmen desired to see a Mars Test team in action, and no Martian golfer could refuse sympathy to the reader who hopefully asked: "About my drive at the eleventh, has it reached you yet?" The humorist, curiously enough, was not much in evidence, confining himself, largely to deplorable remarks regarding "Ma's and Pa's," while Mars would probably see little humor in the announcement that "Mr. Am- ery, our Colonial Secretary, will visit you at an early date." When it came to deciding the win- ning messages one was faced with the query: "What message would one send to Mars?"
