THE OSHAWA DAILY TIMES, SATURDAY, APRIL 27, 1929 -- | BALDWIN TARGET OF BARRIE'S WIT ---- E | Proposed by | British | London, April 27.--Whimsical | af ever, Sir James Barrie chaffed | Stanley Baldwin, the Prime Minis- | ter, good-naturedly the other night at ,the Newspaper Press ] d's dinner. After Baldwin had | proposed a toast to journalism, Sir | James, who responded, sald after | a'few introductory remarks: "My only desire tonight, and I | am sure it is yours also, is to be nfce to Mr. Baldwin, It is not his | fault that he is a Worcesfershire mpn--after all, Shakespeare came very mear being a' Worcestershire | man, but his mother slipped across | fiito Warwickshire to give the boy 8 chance. He would have turned them {nto novels--thrillers, for which Bald- win, and perhaps most of us, admit a dark partiality. "HK Hamlet nad been written in these days it would probably have been called 'The Strange Affair at Elsinore.' "How hard on me it is to make a speech when I know the Prime Minister would far rather I told him a detective story." At that moment a telephone hell rang and Sir James Barrie used two wine-glasses as receiver and transmitter, saying: "Hallo! Halol! Hallo! Yes, I'm here. I'm speaking. Who are your --it's Scotland Yard--the Yara asks you, as a favor, ladies and gentlemen, not to wipe your wine- glasses, as the waiters and pian- clothesmen are taking finger- printg---- ' ; "Who Number one? (looking at Baldwin) Yes, he's here. He is in great danger. They want to know if he 1s carrying a gun--they say it is the most astounding case ne Yard has ever had, and had to call me in to help them, 3 "A complete change has come over London since we sat down to dinner. The streets are seething with men in masks and princesses with daggers in their stockings. "They have broken out of every detective story that number one has ever had, and all of them are after him, "He will never return to Down- ing Street alive, unless I can bring him. He and I must leave the ho- tel first, and alone, and as soon as we two leave, it is to be blown up ---the end of the chapter of the 'Strange Affair at Chequers.' " During the evening Sir Hubert Morgan auctioned off a number of interesting articles in behalf of the fund. The top price of 2,300 guin- eas ($11, 500) was paid by Gabriel T. Wells, New York bookseller, for the original manuscript of Barrie's one-act play, "The Twelve Pound Look," while Sir James himself paid 150 guineas ($750) for a let- ter from Cromwell to the Admiral- ty. : yd Astor, member of Parliament, pre- HOOVER'S FIGURES REPORTED ASL Department of Justice Fig- ures of Crime Are 'Washington, Apr. 27.--Although President Hoover, through a spe- cial compilation of figures for his New York Speech, found that pro- hobition cases make up only eight per cent of the nation's entire fel- ony convictions, inquiry at the De- partment of Justice disclosed the Federal Government has had a much higher percentage of liquor cases. On June 80, 1927, Federal pro- hibition cases comprised 21,000 of the 35000 Federal criminal cases then pending--or 60 per cent, ac- cording to the Justice Department. TERMS--CASH COLLEGE WOODWORK--TEL. 2053w ee The low Hoover estimate for fel- ony 'convictions possibly may be explained by the fact that only a small percentage of violations un- der the Federal prohibition laws were felonies prior to the recent enactment of the Jones Act. As another complicating factor, it was pointed out, New York and several other states leave gaps in prohibition statistics because they have no state enforcement acts. Not Satisfactory Anti-Saloon League officials told the United Press this week there was no satisfactory officlal com- pilation of criminal statistics showing the proportion of crime caused by prohibition, due to this failure to keep statistics. . Do You Own h Your Own The survey upon which Mr. Hoover hased his eight per cent figure has not been made public, but White House officials said the actual percentage of prohibition felony convictions found was 7.3 per cent and that Mr. Hoover usea eight per cent as a round figure. It was explained at the White House the figures came from a number of sources, official and un- official, and where there was any doubt as to whether a crime was due to prohibition--as in the case Stylish Shoes I. The latest Department of Justice annual report showed in the fiscal year ended Jume 30, 1928, some 55,720 criminal prohibition prose- cutions were instituted, an increase of 15,000 over the previous year. There were 34 convictions to each acquittal, it was stated. Prison population figures, also go far to substantiate Mr. Hoover's contention.
