(16) URGES SURVEY OF MANITOBA POWER Col. F. G. Taylor Would De- lay Permit to British Syndicate Winnipeg, April 29.--An amend- ment to Premier John Bracken's resolution for the granting of a priority permit to a British syndi- cate for the development of White Mud Falls on the Nelson river, Northern Manitoba, was moved in the Legislature by Cl. F. G. Tay- lor, Conservative leader, urging that a survey of available water powers in the north be made and a report submitted at next year's session of the House. The Conservative leader made it clear in moving his amendment that he was not opposed to the syndicate in question, the British Dominions Power Company, being granted the priority permit, He suggested the appointment of a commission of three hydraulic engineers to make the survey. Col. Taylor demanded that no water powers should be disposed of in future, without the consent of the Legislature. He contenaed that if the the Government was going to follow the practice of li- censing sites to private interests, it should arrange for a general el- ection. The people should be consulted regarding such a policy, Col. Taylor thought. by Saféguard Resources No stumbling block should be placed in the way of probable de- velopment of Northern Manitoba, commented the Opposition leader, but at the same time he believed the natural resources of the prov- ince should be safeguarded in ev- ery respect, Debate on the amend- ment was adjourned. The Government is not prepar- ed to fill the two vacancies in the Cabinet caused by the regisnations of W, G.. Major, Attorney-Gener- al, and W. R. Clubb, Minister of Public Works, the Premier stated in the House. In reply to a yaes- tion by Col. Taylor, Mr, Bracken declared there would not likely be a general election in the province this summer though he thought there would be one or two by-elec- tions. By a proposed readjustment to be incorporated in the supplemen- tary estimates, salaries of the five Cabinet Ministers will be Increased to $6,000 each, the Premier an- nounced. .. Discussion which rose over old age pensions brought from Prem- fer Bracken an onnouncement that he may go to England this sum- mer to study the old age pension system there. Balluff, who is well known in Ger- many as an archaeologist and his- torian, found in the Waldsee Church a small altar cross manu- factured in Augsburg, which con- tained a thorn about three quar- ters of an inch long, protected against decay by a thin bluish mass of metal. Above the tuoin is inscribed, "De Spinea Christus Corona." The church formerly belonged to the convent of St. Augustin, which in turn was connected with the Lateran church in Rome which possessed many relics. 'When the convent was dissolved the records were removed to Frei- burg, where some years later they were all destroyed by fire. Parson Balluff hopes to add the last link of proof of the authenticity of the relic: by investigation work waicn he will make in Rome, : Storm windows, combination doors. General Contractors. B. W.
