(104-c) | SAYS NATIONAL UNITY GREATEST NEED OF CANADA MONTREAL SAVANT MAKES PLEA AT PRESS BANQUET Annual Meeting of Canadian Daily Newspapers Assn. ., Held in Toronto Toronto, May 3.--Canada should not be made to resemble the United States more and more, but should attempt to gain her material devel- opment through unity and by hav- ing her material development gov= erned by meral and spiritual ele- ments that will include the atum- butes of both English and French culture. : So declared Henri Gagnon, man- aging director of "Le Soleil," Que- bec newspaper; in introducing Edo~ uard Montpetit, secretary of the University offfMontreal and speak- er of the evening at the banquet which concluded the convention of the Canadian Daily Newspapers as- sociation last night. Mr. Mont- petit, declared Mr. Gagnon, js a typical product of French culture, Canada, according to Mr. Mont- petit, was in the midst of the diffi- cult. process of becoming a real un- ity. Because Canada is a land of diversity, the completion of the process wag mage only more diffi- cult, the home of two civilizations of olden days each remaining dis- tinct because of cherished tradi- tions. { If it could not be declared that these two cultures actually co-op- erate, it at-least could be said that on all sides are clearly discerned the desire to co-operate. "We in Canada, which is so wide in territory, so diverse in aspect, have a special need for broad-mind- ed understanding founded on clear vision," he declared. 'All that Quebec has that is worth while, is yours because you, too, are Cana- dians. It is all part of the Cana- dian heritage." Would Kill Canada Mr. Montpetit, whom Mr. Gag- non had introduced as a learned scholar of economics, a study which he had followed after he had grad- uated from law school, asked that Canada be knitted together. "Let us have the courage to be ourselves," he declared. "I do not advocate that in any narrow sense. I mean the opposite or antagonistic to others. insist on the necessity of first be- ing ourselves and then engaging in the most delightful task of under- standing others. And what is most important because it concerns those | children of our race, those who are ito come after us and follow in the | path which we make, let us not lose |. those really Canadian elements, , whether English or French in type, which are ours by inheritance. They must not be lost to the heritage of those who, entéring into our labors to reap the rich harvest of our hopes and dreams, may need these precious things more urgently and more desperately than we will ever know." The press, declared Mr. Montpe- tit, could take a big part in this fusing and in placing before the people of Canada at all times the idea of Canada ag a whole, Nothing could assume as powerful an influ- ence in molding public opinion as the press, he believed, although de- pendent to some extent on narrow party "feelings. Unanimity of the press on all things was not to be expected, he declared. Free discussion or many subjects is a source and indication of progress. But, he pointed out, sound discussion must be free of racial, religious or political influ- ence or bitterness and must be en- larged to the breadth and length of the dominion, truly and sincerely national. Mr. Montpetit was granted a tre- mendous ovation on the completion of hig address. The evening had a truly Canadian aspect, the speaker being introduced by Chevalier Gag- non, leader of a great French-Cana- dian organ, and following immedi- ately after several solos and duets by two members of the Troubadors quartet of Ottawa. Sings French Chansons The French-Canadian chansons Marchand were particularly ap- plauded. Dressed in French- Can- adian habitant costume, Marchand and his, accompanist, Louis Bedard, dian voyageur chant and walked 'slowly the length of the banquet room. Then Marchand vaulted to a position on the piano, and, witu droll gestures, sang several solos. The evening also marked the con- clusion of" Chevalier Gagnon's, ten ancy of the post of president of the C.D.N.A.
