(Sat, May 11) CHANGE DISCOVERY 24th day PROVES VALUABLE] Cost of Gluconic Acid Re- duced From $150 per Pound to 50 Cents Columbus, O., May 4.--Discov= ery by the United States Depart- |: ment of Agriculture of a means to make one of the calcium salts re-| ducing the cost of manufacture from around $150 a pound to 50 cents, was disclosed at the Ameri-! can Chemical Society here. Calcium salts are among the es- sential remedies in medicine and are used as ingredients of many in- dustries. In some forms they are commonplace and cheap. But one of them, taken from gluconic acid, has never been available because of the great expense of making this acid. The Department now has found how to produce the acid cheaply. The discoveries were made by Horace T. Herrick and Orville E. May, of the farm waste section of the Bureau of Chemistry and soils. The newly developed salt, Mr. Herrick said, is the only one which cannot cause abscess when injected into the veins. Injection of ecal- cium salts is not an unusual medi- cal remedy, but with those now available, caution is necessary to keep the salt from contact with the bodily tissues, where it induces abscesses. The cheap method of making the acid was stumbled upon while the chemists were searching for a new way to produce tartaric acid. They were looking for this acid in molds, which are nothing more than the common films that form on the surface of spoiled foods. They ex- amined 150 different molds without finding tartaric acid, but in num- ber 150 unexpectedly obtained the' convention gluconic acid, for sale, (th) |! Old floors finished like mew. doors.
