A pen picture is painted of "the deserted village," dwelt hope and promise, now cmpty, In it the of a large and stultifies their where once ¢ Towards wih deserted homes, misery and de- "we would respectfully point out," one section of the letter reads, "that such vessels will not, only under coni- pulsion, enter any port that does not offer them the courtesy and assistance that the customs office provides. It can only mean ruin for Pugwash, and promotion for Pictou, and an unjust tax on lumber shippers, for the rea- son that Pugwash is sixty miles near- er the bulk of growing timber in this province than Pictou.. We glory in the prosperity that may come to Pictou, but we do not want it fo ori- ginate from berries gathered on the grave of Pugwash. ; "The act to reduce customs service may apply and be consistent in many cases, but it cannot be so shown or ~ proven in regard to Pugwash, which 1s the' third best port on the coast of Nova Scotia in regard to rating, but in many respects the best for the reason that it has naturally the best protection from storms of any harbor in the world. "There has never been a dredge in- side Pugwash light," it is stated in the letter further along, "and yet af- ter -all these years o neglect, the largest ocean-going steamers can en- ter with perfect safety. The appro- priations for harbor improvement for the present year is generously ex- tended, but not one dollar for Pug- wash. What have we done to war- rant this too {cy isolation? It de- mands thou, ot. end of the letter, be- fore the summary and of the port are given in detail, this is found: "Last year was the banner year in shipping for Pugwash since the war. Jt was with delight her waters swirled and ran and her proud bosom 'glewed, for resting on its glossy: surface were many ships from foreign ports afar. We ask you to remove the band, It is a mistaken thrust of a dagger to a patriot's breast. We cannot, do not, will not believe that dagger will remain. We ask it in. the name of our Great, Grand, Glorious God and Father, who placed it in the plan of His Divine creation as a heritage, and a joy to His people along its shores. To Jeave it thus would be to unjustly condemn its great use, purpose and intention and change its sparkling waters to tears of misery and des- pair.' BIG SHIPMENT OF EGGS During March the R.O.P. Poultry Association of Vancouver, shipped 36,000 White Leghorn pedigreed hatching eggs to a hatchery at Peta- luma, California. This shipment was the largest lot of high grade pedi- greed eggs ever assembled anywhere. Northern poultry has greater vigor and stamina than Southern fowl and is therefore specially favoured by California breeders. GANADA IS RICH IN LITERARY MATERIAL English Author Surprised Number of Epics Not Cre- ated from Store of Resources Toronto, May 11.---Surprise that Canada has not produced a great- er number of epics considering the highly- colorful beginning the Do- minfon had together with the ro- mantically historic background of the land itself, the tales of the Jes- uits and the Indian legends was ex- pressed by E. T. Raymond, Eng- lish author, playwright and essay- ist, who is visiting Hart Houss, University of Toronto, for a few days. He is carrying on research work in the University library on the French regime in Canada for a play he will produce soon in London. "O course," declared Mr. Ray- mond to a Mail and Empire repor- ter, "Canada has not a great leis- ure population. To do full uter- ary justice to the dominion might take another generation." Ernest Raymond is not the man to visit a place for a few days and then write a book about it. His visit to Canada will result ii only one nis- torical sketch which he has al- ready conceived. The play will deal with one o f the incidents of early 17th century history which have left Mr. Raymond wondering why no Canadian has dramatized such material before him. The heroine of the play was the daughter of a barber of Mans and was shipped out to de la Tour in Acadia by that nobleman's agent who has been ordered to send a wife along with the rest of the sup- plies. De la Tour was at war with another adventurous mnoble- man, D'Aunay, as to who repre- sented the King of France in Acadia, and whatever her begin- nings Madame la Tour proved a valuaple ally egpousing her huse band's quarrel like the intrepid Amazon she was, After a long conflict, De la Tour and his wife were blocladed in their fort by their rival. De la Tour escaped to Boston to seer the aid of the British. In his ab- sence D'Aunay attacked the fort WINDING A CLOCK IS OLD-FASHIONED (1) clocks that do not QO sre clocks o not keep Let us show you the greatest ad- vance in clocks in a clock that electrici that needs no lev. time as accurately as a rail ki road watch, -- Sangamo Clock, wound." D'Aunay succeeded in the end only by resorting to treachery and the galland defend- ress was subjected to the indig- nity of being stood with a halter about her neck to witness the wholesale hanging of her men. Put into confinement 'she fell ill with spite and rage," says an old chronicler, "and died within three weeks." Some years later, after the death of D'Aunay, La Tour brought this curious drama to a conclusion by marrying the widow of his rival and obtaining restitution from the king who 'made him governor of Acadia. 5 And when he meets the meme bers of the Group of Seven Mr, | Raymond intends to ask them why | they have not painted more pie- | tures of the prairies. He ca here expecting to be bored by t prairies' monotony, he said, an instead finds them the one featur staying in his mind. He enjoye their '"'extraordinary panorama ol color and distance and the exquis ite rythm of curves and folds," said, pointing out that the Ca dian Rockies can be paralleled if Switzerland and the rugged nort has its counterpart in No but the prairies are unique. 3 WBAL, Ww (272) Atlantic City.
