(112a) RADIO LISTENERS T0 HEAR ZEPPELIN Daily Account of Doings Aboard Will Be : Broadcast DIRECT FROM AIRSHIP Code and Voice Will Be Us- ed in Informing Listeners For the first time in history, the radio audience will receive a daily ac- count of a trans-Atlantic flight direct from their own correspondent, when the Graf Zeppelin leaves Friedrich- shafen bound for Lakehurst, N.J,, around May 15th. These accounts will be broadcast every night from New York. For the first part of the ight, the short wave transmitters of the giant blimp will carry the report of Frank E. Nicholson, the first ex- clusive flight correspondent for the radio audience, in code form, but after the Zeppelin passes the fortieth mer- idian in mid-Atlantic, constant efforts will be made to pick up the voice of Mr. Nicholson. It is not expected that these attempts will be success- ful until the Graf Zeppelin nears the Amnierican coast, in which case the code reports will be continued, until transmission of voice becomes prac- tical, In order that the radio audience may receive the daily story in its complete form, cach day's reports, re- ;ardless of the time they are sent rom the Zeppelin, will be given to the radio audience every night at about 11 o'clock, eastern daylight saving time, The exact hour will be announced in a few days. When the Graf nears the American shore, and it is possible to broadcast Nicholson's voice direct from the airship, the broadcast may be put on whenever good reception is obtained, but spe- cial efforts will be made to have Nicholson on the air at the regular 11 o'clock broadcast period. Not only will Mr. Nicholson com- municate with the radio audience, but messages, news information and en- tertainment will be sent of the Graf Zeppelin through the short wave transmitter 2XE operated in connec- tion with WABC, New York. Two- way communication between Nichol- son and New York will be maintain- ed constantly from Friedrichshafen to the landing at Lakchurst. No less than six short wave receiving stations will be established along the Atlantic seaboard to pick up the messages. All of these will be connected by direct wire with WABC's key studios in New York City where the messages will be decoded and prepared for de- livery to the radio audience. When the voice transmission becomes prac- tical, reception at each of the six re- ception stations will be checked for quality, and the best chosen there- from for broadcasting. Department of Public Works, Ottawa, May 1, 1929, RSE = SSE SE QUEEN PRESIDES ALONE AT COURT Hundreds of Debutantes Presented; Her Majesty Wore Gown of Tissue London, May 13.--The [first ourt of the season and the first court in 29 years over which a queen of England has presided alone, was held recently. The single golden throne was con- spicuous but the knowledge that the king had fully recovered from his illness, although not yet strong enough to attend such a ceremony, lent zest to the gaiety. Queen Mary, in a wonderful gown of tissue which changed color with every movement, was the cen- tral figure of the brilliant scene in Buckingham palace, made all the more striking by the fact that her majesty stood alone in her regal splendor during the long hours while hundreds of debutantes made their curtsies before her. Her majesty wore an embroider- ed gverdress in a soft pastel shade and a train of Indian brocade shad- ed to tone with the gown and lin- ed with pale gold and pastel chif- fon tissue. She wore a diamond and pear] diadem and ropes of pearls and diamonds, with the ur- der of the garter and family orders glittering on her breast. At 9.30 pm., a band of the Irish Guards in the palace courtyard and a string band of the same regiment in the state music room, struck up the national anthem. At that in- stant the royal procession, ushered by court officialg in full dress, ap- peared at the entrance to the ball- room. The queen, with the Prince of Wales in the full dress uniform of a colonel of the Welsh Guards, walked at the head followed by other members of the royal family. The procession moved across the crimson carpeted corridor from the white drawing room and passed across the ball room to the foot of .the throne where the queen stopped and the royal circle formed behind her. The Prince of Wales stood at the right behind the queen. One by one the debutantes, in gowng which had cost weeks of an- xious thought, now passed before the throne to make their curtsies and move on to the long picture gallery, The court curtsy was only to Queen Mary and not to the prince, who, after escorting the queen to the throne, occupied an ordinary place as a member of the royal circle. Masses of roses and blue and white hydrangeas decorated the room. Four Indian orderly officers to the king who have had service of more than 20 years, were in at- tendance on the queen, their bril- liant uniforms of scarlet and green with red and black facings and tur bans being very striking. The picture gallery was the scene of almost equal brilliance where privy councillors, naval and military officers, diplomats with varied uniforms and glittering or- ders and decorations, were in con- stant movement. A feature of the wait in the Mall this year for the first time was the number of portable radio sets that picked up broadcasts of orchestral and other concerts. Among those presented to her majesty was Miss Helen Wills, the tennis champion.
