(Wed, May 15) SAGA OF THE SEA TOLD INSHIP'S LOG Vivid Picture of Peril in Record of Schooner, James E. Coburn New Bedford, Mass.,, May 15.-- The log of the lost four-musted schooner James E. Coburn of this port furnishes an unusually vivid picture of peril at sea. The Co- burn"s crew was picked up from a small boat by a yacht after the schooner went down. One mem- ber of the crew had succumbed to exposure before the rescue was made, * ailie's Excerpts from the log, sworn to by the Coburn"s skipper, Captain J. J. Perreira, follows: "April 14 was clear, with the wind to the westward, but more to the north towards eveing. "April 15 as windy and stormy. The steam pump gave us trouble, due to choking but we finally cleared it and she pumped again, The water kept increasing in the holds, and the crew was kept working to keep the water down. "April 16 was stormy with high wind from the southwest. Pumps stil giving trouble by choking, and the crew kept busy at tne hand Symps in addition to the steam pumps and a gasoline pump. But the water kept gaining be- cause the pumps kept choking, have to be stopped, cleared and started again, which allowed the water to gain. The sea was so heavy that it was necesary to run before it. We sighted a larpes steamer sometime in the night. but owing to the darkness, they did not see us and passed on. The wind was blowing hard and we rowed and sailed, as much us .ne ind and sea would allow us in the general direction of Bermuda, which we figured was the nearest land "Along about the 24th the wind moderated somewhat and at 10.30 that night the cook. William Sar- geant. died of exposure. We kept his body aboard for burial until the next morning. "On April 25 the yacht Amida 'was sighted and at 5.65 they pick- ed up us. The cook was buried first. then we were taken below where we were given food, drink and rest. We were treated excel- lently by the captain of the Amida and his officers.
