The last day of the convention saw a complete victory accorded Dr. T. Shields, president of the univer- sity board, and his fellow trustees. With their actign in dismissing the Des Moines faculty given the full approval of the union, which controls the university, they declared their determination to rebuild the univer- sity to the structure they had origin- ally intended, as a stronghold and training ground of fundamentalist religion. There was a stronge contrast be- tween the closing of the convention and the stormy scenes of yesterday, when Dr. Shields held the platform for hours in fiery denunciation of the opponents whom 'he accused of plot- ting diabolically to run his charac- ter. Tonight Dr. Shields hurled no thunderbolts. "Let us go home with a song of victory, praise and thanks- giving," were his closing words. He urged his hearers to fight for the cause of fundamentalism, "We are just now engaged in a movement that is as far reaching as was the reformation," he declared. "But we shall have to fight and fight again." While his vindication of charges in connection with the Des Moines uni- versity conflict was being given the touch of completion today by his un- animous re-election as president of the union he was taking steps to fight the injunction by which the Towa courts restrained the trustees' power to close the university, The injunction was obtained on Monday after the board of trustees had dismissed the faculty and ordered the university closed, Dr. Shields stated today, however, that the re- moval of the injunction would not mean the closing of the institution. On Dr, Shields' behalf, Trustee E. A. Roberts, of Cleveland, today asked oJhn W, Van Allen, Buffalo attor- ney, to recommend counsel and keep in touch with the situation at Des Moines. In addition to this legal move, Dr. Shields repeated his threat of legal action against Dr. Wayman for sug- gestions of impropriety, attributed to the dismissed president of the uni- versity in a telegram interview, "Dr. Wayman," Dr, Shields stated, "is cvidently a type of scandal mon- ger, irresponsible, who can be brought to his senses, if he has any, only by recourse to the law. For his infor- mation [ repeat that the next issue of the Gospel Witness will not only cover every question raised by Dr, Wayman, byt will contain the open letter by Dr, Lewis Hale dealing with Dr. Wayman's degrees, all the im- portant correspondence relating thereto, and the full story of his con- spiracy with Rev. Minor Stevens, of Des Moines, and Rev. Warren L. Stevens, of Waterloo, culminating in the student riot of last Saturday. "Nothing will be kept back, no one will be spared; and the whole truth will be told. The issue will remain an abiding monument to the perfidy of Dr. Wayman and his fellow con- spirators." With the unanimous re-clection of Dr. Shields as-president of the union went. the equally unanimous decision to re-appoint Miss Edith Rebman, of Toronto, wliose name had been coupled with that of Dr. Shields in the charges which the convention re- pudiated, as secretary-treasurer. Rev. | bee. E. A, Roberts, of Cleveland, was elec- ted first vice-president, and Rev. J. 1. Van Gorder, of Butler, Pa., second vice-president. Rev. C. ]. Loney, Hamilton, Ont.; Rev. N. W. Van- Osdell, Grand Rapids,, Mich. ; Arthur B. Fowler, Earl G. Griffith and Rev. Charles F. Fredman were elected to the executive committee, ANNIVERSARY AT NEWCASTLE SUNDAY SCHOOL Rev. W. P.
