(118¢c) PEOPLE WORSHIP SATAN THROUGH BELIEF IN GOD A people who worship the devil because they have an abiding faith in God was the subject of a talk by Professor E. A. Speiser, assist- ant professor of Semitics of the University of Pennsylvania. These "Devid Worshippers" are the Yezidis of Kurdistan, with whom Dr. Speiser came in contact during his recently completed two years' stay in the Near East, where he made historical and archaeolo- gical investigations for the Ameri- can Schools of Oriental Researcn and for the Guggenheim Founda- tion. : Although professing a belief im Satan, this people described by Dr. Speiser as "curious, kind, unsophis- ticated and with a fine sense of hu- mor", do believe in God, he said, and then explained in this way: "The Yezidis know that God is very good and kind. Now, since the opposite ig true of the devil, and since they know that Satan is intent on harming mankind, they concentrate all their religious acue vities upon propitiating the powers of evil." According to the lecturer, their shmple and primitive faith has brought upon them inconceivable persecution. Members of many re- ligions, he said, seem to consider it their sacred duty to exterminate the small, but very ancient, tribe of Yezidis. "It is a marvel," said Dr. Speis- er, "that in the face of most try- ing living conditions the Yezius have survived unto thig day. It is even more remarkable that throughout centuries of persecu- tion they have preserved their sim picity and their good humor. They are, on the whole, much kinder than the neighboring Kurds, and they treat their women much bet- ter. Monogamy is the rule, which only the chiefs sometimes manage to evade." "A PRAYER FOR A GARDEN" I know you for a friendly thing Where flowers and trees are whis- pering, Where my wild birds of thought can fly With none to trap them nor deny. You are a sanctuary, set Close to a noisy street, and yet May your sweet spirit smooth away The Ju rows from a storm-tossed ay. How many an alien window looks Into your dim sequestered nooks. May something very rare and true Refresh the eyes that gaze on you. Let incense from your humblest flower Rise high, and mark the secret hour Of some o'er-laden heart's release; May all your winding paths be peace, Your Jacob's Ladder, may it rise For ever climbing to the skies. May starry promise ever shine In marigold and jessamine. You: meekogyd pansies, may they e Mute witnesses of sanctity. Your lowly lilies all express Beatitudes of holiness. May those who seek your calm re- Find some old blessing pure and sweet. Then joy shall flood and overflow The toiler with the spade and hoo, --Tay Inchfaun. Kent education committee has approved of a scheme to spend £100,000 on erecting new schools and improving existing ones. THOU HAST NOTHING TO DRAW WITH Ay, there is the rub! The world, like a bountiful well, is full of ood things, but the problems is ow to get them. The well is deep, and so many people do not have the rope of money or brains or purpose with which to. draw, 1 am pot much of a political econo- mist. The whole présent system may be wrong, and need righting --1 don't know. But there is one very simple way of getting things into better shape now. Those of us who have ropes can lend them to those who have not. A helping hand is the longest rope in the world, and will reach the bottom of wells so deep that nothing else can touch them, HOW IMPORTANT ARE YOU? When some important woman comes to town and receptions, lun- cheons and fetes are the order of the day, it has always been a great satisfaction to me, though neglect- ed on such occasions, to reflect that I really am far more import- ant than the community often seems to realize. My name never appears on the list of those who are photographed with the .govern- or or the mayor and the guest. I never sit at the head table and in- troduce '"'our gracious visitor" with the customary compliments. But all I have to do is to sit down with my newspaper at home and. immediately the situation changes. I am a person of great importance. Looms whirl for my convenience, laboratories scheme new facts of science for me, fura- aces flame and metal is poured for my use and ediffcation. Silk worms spin garments for me and the great logs of our forests ure reduced to artificial textiles for my beautification. Whole indus- tries are transformed month by month to suit my whims. In pages and pages of advertising I find de~ scribed and offered to me---and to you--all the multiple diversified tasks of industry, trade and com- merce, in order that I may live in greater convenience, comfort and pleasure. ' Let us read our papers. In the end we learn a great deal more from them than from the orators. HUMAN RIGHTS than they arel: DISNEY-COTT AMBULANCE 87 Celina St. Phoae 108! Bassett's On Oshawa's Main Corner (From The Christian Sci Monitor) In the first chapter of Genesis it is recorded that after God had created the heaven and the earth He said, "Let us make man in our image, after the likeness: and let them have dominion." And the record continues: "So God ecreat- ed man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. And God blessed them." Concerning the law governing the demonstration in human ways, of these divine rights of man, Jesus said, "Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled." Christ Jesus synthesized the moral law and adapted it to his new gospel in an easily understood form when he declared, 'Thou shalt love the Lord thy God. . . and . « » thy neighbour as thyself," re- cognizing God as divine Love, which must be reflected in human affairs. The Revelator, while on earth and in the flesh, beheld "a new heaven and a new earth," the spiritual universe of God's creat- ing, and man as.living in accord with the glorious platform of spiritual blessedness, ordained in the beginning by God, thus fulffll- ing God's law. As men come to see the truth concerning spiritual man, they will endeavor to establish in all organizations designed to pro- mote human welfare those essen- tials of happiness and success-- peace, good will, temperance, ana charity. Demonstrating a higher platform of human rights, individ- uals will find themselves in pos- session of man's divine right, true spiritual dominion.
