C. Young, the Rev. Father William A. Fleming, chaplain of San Quentin Prison, declared that prohibition is "3 miserable failure" and is crowding jails and prisons. Excerpts from his report fellow: ; : "The crime wave. that is sweeping the length and breadth of the lan at the present time has given food for serious thought to those who have the interest of the future wel- fare of our citizenry at heart." "Some have tried to legislate mor- ality into the people. We 'were told some years ago that with the advent of strict legislation on one of our great moral problems, poverty, crime and jails would disappear." "Unfortunately, the opposite is the result. Poverty is still with wus. Crime is increasing. And .our jails are filled and new ones being built." "That social experiment has been, in: regard to crime, a miserable fail- ure." 'PROPERTY DEAL IN HAMPTON VILLAGE Frank Cowling Buys Bam From Elliott Estate and Moves it to His Property Hampton; May 20.--There was a good attendance at the Young Peo- ple's League meeting on Friday eve- ning. Rev. Mr. Grifith of Black- stock, led in a lively discussion on "Prayer." He emphasized the fact that in these days of prosperity, peo- ple seemed to think it not necessary to pray as in the days gone by. Her daughter, Mrs, Dr. Kippen of Newdale, who spent a few days here accompanied her to her home, Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Salter visit- ed relatives at Greenbank on Sun- day. : Geo, Barron conducted the Sunday school on Sunday afternoon, in the abgence of the superintendent, Mr. Salter. Quite a number of her friends here attended the funeral of Mrs. H. Cryderman, Bowmanville, on Friday afternoon, which took place from St. John's church. Now he has lost thoy curse and the $3,000, representing his 'life savings. Cuddy, who is brakeman on the New York Cen- trai and 23 years of age, had ar- cumulated the $3,000, and had been gradualling adding to it until a yedr ago. The gipsies were ran- ning a fortune-télling place in a small store, and when he told 'his troubles he was assured remowing the curse from money was ong of the nain parts of their Rusi:jess. He was told to draw out his money in hundred-dollar bills, He com- plied, and heard the gipsy mwtter- ing words over thé bundle, which was then put into a handkerchief and tied.
